View Full Version : How good should I be?
Chris Roberts

Hi,
Here's another newbie question I'm afriad!! (Hey - one day I might know
something someone else doesn't!!)
I got my heli towards the end of last year and have spent about 5 tanks of
fuel practicing to hover. I've recently bought Tru-Flite 3D and am
beginning to practice on this before getting the heli out again.
My question is this. How good do you need to get at hovering? At the
moment I'm running 30% expo on both 'aileron' and 'elevator' and 40% expo on
the tail and I can pretty much hover on the sim.
Should I be reducing the amount of expo bit by bit until I can hover without
using any? Do I just keep the settings at whatever I'm happy with and then
just use the idle-ups for other stuff?
Cheers,
- Chris

Expo is for poofs

In no particular order...
1) I wouldn't worry about idle-ups at the moment, they will come much later.
Obviously try them out on the sim.
2) Any sim time is good, it tunes your inbuilt reactions to the heli, much like
no longer having to think about changing gears in your car.
3) Difficult to comment on the amount of expo, as each helicopter is different.
I would leave them where they are until you have totally cracked the hovering
thing.
4) Hovering on a sim is no way related to hovering for real. Most sims let you
take off and sit in a hover while you go and make a cup of tea.
5) Hovering is like piano practise...mostly boring and doesn't seem like a lot
of point, but it is the key to successful flying. Make sure you are 100% happy
in the hover, because whenever you get into trouble in the learning phase, you
will usually be able to revert to the hover to get you out of trouble. Get used
to hovering to both sides of you before moving on.
6) For better sim practise, knock all your trims off centre, then try hovering.

There are 2 phrases I know of which are similar to "your cards are
numbered":-
1. Your cards are marked
2. Your days are numbered
1 or 2?
If you actually meant to say "your cards are numbered" then you are quite
correct. My cards are indeed numbered and I use them to buy toy
helicopters - saves me having to spend my beer money :-)

Siam Heli
Feb 11, 2003, 09:12 PM
Expos are alright - they make for a smoother picture. But expo will not make
learning to hover really easier or faster - unless you've got the physics of
your heli already in your 'belly'. Even with expos, you still will have to
know what your heli's going to do next if you do that or that.
However, once the heli became kind of your extended arm, expo will add more
grace as you'll find it easier to place the bird exactly where you want it
to be in a smooth transition.
As for the beginning and on the sim, I'd not start with too much expo. It
doesn't matter how it looks on the sim but it matters that you learn what
happens when and if... unconscious controlling (thinking in advance) is the
name of the game. Practice is required and that can't be substituted.
Hovering will be for ever part of your flying, even once you're really good.
Today, I have a special 'hover mode' programmed into my radio, containing a
fair amount of expo. I use it for precission hover maneuvers in all possible
angles. If someone says expo is for babies, well, I consider that silly. Why
not making your life easier if you can? It's like not using the clutch on
your man. car, which is well possible if you're sensible enough. But where
is the point?
