I like the TC3 because it doesn't have that stupid belt assembly that the XS
has....

What's stupid about the belt assembly? It works very well and there's
basically no maintenance involved.

What does your LHS carry more parts for, what is more popular at the
track you run at?

depending on which shop I go to, the parts are pretty evenly available, as
for the track that I run at, during the top of the season when we had the
most people racing, there was I think one or two more XXXS's then TC3's, but
my friends TC3 got 1st, and I came in 2nd overall, because I missed half the
season so I couldn't get enough points to pass over him, unless of course I
rammed him off the course so he couldn't get points for 2nd or 3rd... hmmmm
doh! :)

Not if you want to play on the street/parking lot. Been there, done
that, spent way too much money before giving up. 6 cases of generic
Sprite every time I wanted to play was getting a bit old ;) We did
come up with interesting delivery methods for the Sprite, though. My
favorite was the one involving a 6 pack, a paint mixer, and one of
those old full auto BB guns that ran on a freon can :)

Do you ever replace the belt? If so, there is maintenance involved.
It's one more thing to break before the main.
Also, the chassis is very thin around the motor area.. and prone to
breakage during a t-bone.

If the belt is needing replacement more often than the chassis, the
tension is way, way too tight. It's sealed in so there's nothing that
will chew it up and the pulleys are fairly large diameter to reduce
stress on the belt. It's not perfect, nothing is, but it's a pretty
good setup. If it does need to be changed, 6 bolts out of the front
diff housing, 6 out the rear, 3 to remove the spur cover, and 2 to
release the tensioner. 5 minutes, tops.

I could see the edge of the chassis right at the endbell of the motor
snapping, but that part isn't particularly important structurally.
The chassis's strength comes from the tunnel. The sides are only there
to hold stuff.
Have you driven a XXXS? The thing is pretty fast with a stock motor.
It's a bullet with a 19 or 20 turn mod motor. It's a bloody missile
with an 8 turn Flatliner ;) I don't even want to think about what will
happen with a brushless setup, but I'm going to try it sometime soon.
Now I'm off to a job interview. If I get this one, life will be much
faster. First paycheck would buy a nice, shiny new nitro 4-Tec with
money left over ;)

Hmm...maybe they did get it figured out. I remember my XX4...what a
P.O.S. that thing was. Constantly breaking belts, alot of drag, etc. I
realize that is a very old design, but if I can just avoid a belt
altogether I will. One question, do you carry a spare belt?

Well, a buddy at the track had it happen and it broke more than just
the edge along the end bell. Also, if you look, you will see that
there isnt any material from the edge of the endbell all the way to
the belt. It's a big open space. Once that end piece breaks, there is
alot of room for chassis flex.
One more thing: he was running a graphite chassis...which is more
brittle and easier to break. Probably had alot to do with it.

I personally am an Associated person; just ask anyone who has seen my
posts. :) I also cant stand the sound of the belt skipping under
breaking. A guy at our track tightened the belt so that it wouldn't
strip, and he stripped the belt into shreds! I just like the shaft
drive setup better. No belts to worry about.
Just me 3 cents.

I already replied to this saying to get the TC3, but I just did more
research on the XXX-s, it's a really nice setup. I'd say pick
whichever one you can afford and like, slightly biased towards the
newest model (xxx-s)... so if you can get a XXX-s, get it (providing
parts are easily available locally) if not, then go for the TC3... but
dont waste too much money on TC3 eye candy (factory team, etc) ..cause
thats all that blue stuff is good for (excluding threaded shock
bodies).
I picked the TC3 initially because it was the newest at the time,
because I like associated, and because I could get the racer for just
over $100. When I pick a new car it -may- be a XXX-s because I dont
care too much for the TC3 rack and pinion steering...it's a little
sloppy.

From what I understand, and I haven't looked closely at an earlier
car, they've greatly improved the setup. It's possible to run the
thing with the tensioner all the way slack and it still won't slip
under power. The geometry is right in there so there's much less
stress on the belt. I don't carry a spare, but then I don't care many
spares at all. Once I start going to the track regularly that might
change, though.

That's why I don't do graphite. Carbon fiber is too brittle. Now if
someone was to make a kevlar chassis I'd be all over it. That stuff
laughs at impact.
>No, but I've driven past them :)
Just don't get in my way or I'll push you around the track ;) This
motor is evil.

I hadn't paid much attention to the TC3 steering linkage. Doesn't look
good to me. Maybe with bearing supported parts made of aluminum, but
not a plastic "rack". Put bearings in the XXXS steering arms and it's
just about as tight as it can get. Works great even with a Futaba 3003
servo.

i bet you like the shaft drive predator also then... i really dont like the
sound of bevel gears chewing up either..
then there is my blazing star (tamiya) bevel gears slipping there too..
sigh...
just got a tc3, it was cheap so i thought why not, not impressed with the
handleing or the work involved in gettin a diff out... but its a nice drive
train, very fast indeed.. there is more drag in the xxxs/xxx4 drive train...
tho its lighter.
