View Full Version : Oil droping during the break in
nospam

Hello,
This week end I have started the break in of the motor of my qrc.
It was quite cold and I have run the motor rich (needle wide open).
There was oil that was going out of the muffler.
One drop each 3 seconds.
Is it normal?
Will my motor continue drop oil on the ground when
the mixture will be less rich (by closing the needle)?
Thanks for your answers

G'Day,
it's quite normal for reasonably large quantities of unburnt oil to exit the
muffler. When breaking in, this is what you want to happen as it provides
more lubricant, which aids in cooling and also aids in removing the
microscopic pieces of metal you create when breaking in.
As you lean the mixture out, less unburnt oil will exit the muffler but you
should always have some coming out or your engine won't last very long....
It may not come out as drips, more a spray/mist in the smoke.
Regards,
Brad.

yes and yes.
the oil component of the fuel does not burn - and will usually end up on the
wifes new oriental rug as you carry the car inside.
It will dip much less as you lean the needle though.

That's only if it's a light coloured rug, though. Rugs that are dark and would
hide an oil stain are a safe bet for stopping any oil dripping at all .. ;)
