Has anyone used this freeship program? For hull shape and other calculations.

http://www.download.com/Freeship/3000-6677_4-10558861.html

I saw it in the blimp section of RCgroups posted by Johannes (show's screen shot from program which is beyond me how to do)

http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?t=914459

It's a demo version I think but can be useful (if you know how to use it), would be interested to hear if anyone has made use of it or if you have to buy it to get much out of it. Cap

PS it has shown up here a while back it looks like but not much

Its called Delftship now

Never paid for it, the free version gives you everything you need as a modeller. you can save and print, the most important ;) thing you need to do. I posted a pdf in the other recent cad thread with a game boat hull I produced in a couple of hours.
I think you may need to sign up now to download the latest version.

Nick

Nick, that sure looks similar, it looks like it might have more features. I was able to download "freeship" (see above) and I installed it and it works, what all it can do I'm not sure but I didn't have to sign up for it. I can manipulate the points on the hull to change it's shape, it's interesting to tinker with, I haven't gotten far into it though. Cap

Capricorn,
I've just been updating as the new versions came out the last one I had to sign up for, its still free. For what I do the freeship release that you have is realistically all I need .
Lots of little tricks to it.
I just try and recreate hulls on the program at the moment, that gives good practice on learning the features. I have grand plans of cutting foam plugs using it and some CAM software.

I am presently using Freeship for my work on a modelof the sternwheeler Portland. Have Delphship but the free version of it does not allow some of the fetures. You have to buy the program for those.
Both take some getting use to in order to get your lines where you want them.

Dave, Where are you on the development of the PORTLAND? I had a chance to visit it before it was taken out of service. It is a steamboat that I had a lot of interest in. Where do you live? I live in Olympia and might have some of the pictures I took of the PORTLAND in my files somewhere. Jerryj98501

Jerry

I am working on the engine and boiler design at this time. I was aboard her in St. Helens a couple of years ago and got a lot of pictures then. She had a steering failure on her way to Cascade Locks a few weeks ago and is presently waiting to go into dry dock to fix damage to rudders and paddle wheel. I am hoping that I can get aboard here while she is in dry dock and get pictures of hull, rudders and paddle wheel. I have a basic set of drawings in 1/8" to foot scale that I am working on scaleing up to 3/8" to the foot.

I live up the Lewis River Road 6 miles shy of Cougar Wa.

Dave, What will be the dimensions of the finished model? I was also wondering if it will be live steam or electric motor powered? My friend, Les Cade called me tonight and when I mentioned your build, he said the PORTLAND is in dry dock at this time. Jerryj98501

Nick that sounds interesting, you'll use the coordinates from the program to machine foam hulls? It would be nice to have access to equipment like that.
Dave, Jerry, Is that the sternwheel tug Portland? I had the pleasure of visiting Portland this summer, beautiful city, the museum was closed but we saw the boat from the pier. Post some pictures if you have them, the model too. Cap

At 3/8" per foot the hull less the structure that carries the paddle is 5'9" long and 15 3/4" wide and about 3 3/4" keel to deck. Yes she will be live steam. Main engine .813" bore 3.250" stroke. Hope to also do a live steam steering engine and all four double drum deck winches. It is going to be a long project but I need something to keep me busy I will retire in 2 years.

Yes it is the Steam Tug Portland.

Dave, that sounds like a great project, I look forward to seeing it built and photo's of it (the model). The rudders do seem vulnerable but I guess they usually are. Thanks for the photo's. Cap

And that is only 3 of 7 there are 4 more main rudders fwd of the paddle wheel. These are the 3 Monkey rudders.

This build will take a fare amount of time to say the least. Will post pics as they become available.
