Hey Guys,
I have a giant scale top flight p-51 arc on the way.
I built one last year gas but sold it and went all electric

I'm going to glass this plane most likely
have a full cockpit.. good amount of detail.. I'm going to do my best to come in around 25 to 26 pounds...

My thoughts on the power settup was to run the same settup I have in my 30% extra...

1521 geared neu motor on 12s 6000 mah .. this gives me 4000 watts with a 24x12 prop ..spinning at 7100 rpm.. it's light and works great

I'd love to get some input from anybody that has a hotter settup that is still light.. if I could use a 4 blade and not lose speed that would be great

really want some feed back to make this the best project I can

I'll do a thread once I get going ... for now it's feed back and research

so come one guys help me out

hmmmm, a 24" prop might be a bit big. im not shore, do you have motocalc? that will help you figure it out.

I'm using a 24 x 12 on my extra.. flys great at 18lbs.

I have motocalc ... what weight do the want for battery cells

the weight per cell? or all 6s?

sounds like it should work. how much does your entire pack weigh?

Ron101
Aug 28, 2008, 08:03 PM
I run two 6s packs in series eash is 726 grams so 1452 grams for both

I think this settup will work good.. bladerunner is running an axi 5345/16 in his at something like 2800 watts and it's flying great..

I'll also be checking out the new hacker A80 coming out.. might be an option..

I want this thing to fly really good
I just have to keep it really light

I run a hacker c50-13xl in the 150 hangar 9 p-47. I run 10s 5000's swinging a 22x12 apc, plane is 17 lbs., 2500 watts and it flies real nice!

Mpope I had to look that one up...
to tell the truth I didn't know hacker had gear motors...

I'm going to call tomorrow and ask about the a80 that's coming out soon..

but I'm still leaning hard toward the neu motor..

Sounds like a great plane!! I'm lookig forward to having a gaint warbird again

keep those power ideas coming

how about the A100 that looks like a beast from hacker... over kill for what I'm doing

1521 on 12S is a great idea, and probably your best bet.

If you want to go all out, you need a sound system though :D.

I know Bone Doc... I really want the sound system too..
but it's an extra pound... so I just don't think I can swing it

My plan is to get it together then fly it.. if I can carry another pound of weight I'll have to retro fit the sound system..

but you are right it's so cool

As for me, I'm going to build my whole plane AROUND the sound system. I have to work out the bugs first to figure out what configuration works best. I think I'm going to build a proto flying Subwoofer plane (basically) :D... and see whether or not it can swing enough volume :D.

That the way to really do it
I'm just worried about weight... maybe if you kit build it and keep it really light

but with this being an ARC... it all hot glue.. and overbuilt for electric
I'm going to cut out what I can.. lighten up the firewall..

run lipos for the RX... I'm pretty sure I can have pretty scaled out and be 25 pounds with some care... if I'm right then you could get the sound in there and be 26

if you go with monokote and no cockpit you could do sound no problem....

I'm sure you've checked out http://www.aerosoundrc.com/
the P-47 is a flying speaker box..lol.. and sounds great!!

when you get started do a thread

I spoke with hacker too see what they thought would work well for my project..

The A80-10 sounds like a real beast of a motor..

it can spin a 24x12 to 4600 watts at 6100 rpm on 12s

I think I'd prop down for speed maybe a 22x12 or 14 and pull less watts and amps... so it sound like a pretty good option also

on the down side it 2.2 pounds which is over twice the weight of the neu motor...

I still have lots of time to figure it out... I just like to have things planed out really good going in. It's really helped to make all my porject impressive to watch fly

We were discussing this motor in another thread, and I posted a link from Hacker Germany. They have the A80 listed as 3.2 lbs (http://www.hacker-motor.com/images/Catalog08/Hacker-2008-WEB%2021.pdf).

And 2.2 lbs is twice the weight of a bare 1521, but the motor/gearbox is about 25oz, so the motor/gearbox will still end up weighing about half what the A80 will weigh. I don't think a 1521 is going to be in the same league as an A80, power-wise.

3.2 pounds wow.. I must have misheard him

that's heavy... but maybe with all that power I'd be good

But I don't think 5000mah or 6000 mah would give me a very good flight time with this thig

but then again if I proped down.. I might be alright

For weight it seem to make more since to prop up a smaller motor..

but this does look pretty good.. I'll have to really think about this

Keep in mind also thought that you MIGHT need the extra weight to balance. So either bigger motor or bigger battery.

I thought of that BoneDoc..

Bladerunner has the Axi 5345 in his Big Beautiful Doll ARF his 12s 5000 packs look to be very close to the fire wall. The AXI is about 2 pounds. So with the Nue motor I'd have to open up the bottom of the fire wall and have my packs go up into the cowl area.. not the best but it saves weight. that's what I did on my extra

Here is a video of his flying with his bud that has a DA 50 in his... you can see the electric is faster: http://ca.youtube.com/watch?v=mn1s5UPZZY4
Thats with the AXI 5345 and a 22x10 prop at 80 amps his is 24 pounds

Here's link to my extra with the Neu: http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?t=767389&highlight=dietrich+extra

funny me a Bonedoc were talking about the P-51 back in Nov. 07 and now
I'm just getting around to it.. but I've built about 5 planes since then

Also if I go with the A-80-10 I think I'd need some high mah pack

it's also a expensive settup.. the motor is $669 and you should run the 170 master spin which is $640 then I'd need higher mah packs for sure... I better stick with the nue and be a happy camper :D

Sorry you guys have to hear me think out loud I just want this to be a really cool plane.. I'll spend what it takes to make it very cool

We all can dream can't we? :D.

At any rate, my idea has been fermenting for over a year, but has not had the time to commit to it for now :(.

Ron, if you decide to go with a Neu motor you should order one right away as they are hard to come by. I'd like to see how it performs, I don't see many people flying them geared or direct drive.

Ron101
Sep 05, 2008, 11:44 AM
Your right drksyd,
I really should get on it.. the other good part about the nue is I can push this thing over 4000 watts and be fine.. I have a couple of them in my jets and they can be pushed to 5000 watts.. so I could always bump up to 14 or 15s and haul axx!!

I'll get it ordered really soon.. right now the plane is on backorder
so I won't see it till the end of the month.. I also have a spyculla cowl on order.. this makes the cowl much more scale and also the right size spinner,
one of the big down falls to the top flight kit.. it also gets molded into the fuse so it doesn't look like a slip on cowl

Nice, I haven't heard of the spyculla before, I have to look it up. When I do get to my kit, I'll probably go with a 5345, maybe if I save I can get me a geared Neu lol.

I haven't heard of the spyculla either. Where can I find one?

Didn't see this one pop back up..
sorry guys

Yep your right thanks benny

My build is moving along..the sound system is next :D

I moved my build over to glow to electric conversions:

The cowl is a work of art.. very nice stuff and leo is great to deal with
