Hi guys,
Do ya think the CVRC would get disturbed if I brought a paintball gun to shoot down some old beater planes of mine? Might be great sporting fun, but I don't want to get anyone mad at me for dropping paintballs on their turf.

SJ,
I have a spud gun I could bring, too. And I know how to get the effect of a shotgun from a handful of ice-cubes or grapes with it!
But the question still lies unanswered....do ya think the CVRC guys will kick me off the field for this stuff? But before we answer that, let me explain what the set-up is.
Those who have been to this field know that directly north and east of the field are large, mostly empty, water holding ponds that sock up the excess rainwater during the rainy season. So, there is a nice open range there. The target planes fly only over the empty holding ponds, and we shoot at the planes only in the direction of the holding ponds so that no fire is directed towards people and property. As for the planes versus the paintball guns...I plan on using up a GWS P-40 that made of foam, and a Hobby People Little Stik electric that also has a foam wing. And anything else I can put together to shoot down. And if anyone else wants to bring their paintball marker, I don't care...the more, the better!
Thanks!

:) This year the Wilson Cup will be held September 7, 2008 at the CVRC
field. The landing zones that we will be using for the Fall Fest will
be what you will get to practice with. So come on out and hone your
skills. Remember that the Fall Fest is just over a month away. Here is
your chance to get an edge up on everybody. :) :)

Most posts in this forum are about keeping planes in the air. Now, here come posts on bringing them down with a potato gun. Do the classier shooters use a brussel sprout pistol?
Jim Deck

Aug 29, 2008, 12:37 AM
Jim,
Now, let me explain this. We ain't talking about your standard Idaho spud....No, no! We are talking about good Russets or small reds. Besides, the brussel sprouts tend to come apart in the air. But on a more serious note, I have brought this thing to Visalia before, and although most of the spuds end up off the field, someone will eventually aim high and the trajectory brings it down on the field. I don't want that because as long as people are on the field, there is a danger of hitting them. So, I will leave it home this time.
And Jim....I understand that the best spud guns come from your part of the country! (Just try a Google search on "spud gun" and watch what happens!)(gattling spud guns!)

It is a very nice plane with many variations... mine's the affordable one. I think Bob's selling them for $899...
... in defense of brussell sprouts, though, they only fall apart if you let them thaw... frozen sprouts are very hearty and should make nice clean holes in any foamy... and should go well with Merrills pot luck... %^)

I think I was exposed to the JW version. It looked interesting. So many planes so little time.
I think that taped Zagi's would make for a very hard target. I cant see much flying time out of a slow stick after anything hits it.

Hey Webb,
We hit a Slo-Stik with like a dozen rounds from a paintball gun in the wing. It looked like swiss cheese! It still flew like nothing happened! And we are talking 62 caliber paintballs...over half inch and they cut through the wing like nothing! And that's the beauty of this thing....What's it going to take to bring down a plane? Shall we find out? Will it be frozen brussel sprouts, or maybe the grapes of wrath? Will some other soul jump in with a spud gun and take it down in a single shot? Or will a paintball split on the receiver and simply short it out? Personally, I would like to see a GWS P-40 Warhawk get blown to small foam beads and have that on video. Should be interesting.

You know I can see your point. I had a mid air in a tip panel that mushroomed the lead edge to about 1.25 inches with a significant hole behind it. I can't say I really even noticed it at all. I thermalled the round out and put in a 999.70 IF I had pinged off 1/10 of s econd earlier I would have won the round.
Maybe I will bring something foamy to fly .... :)

My other reasons are:

- To watch all of the great flying (including the cool night flying)
- To camp in one of the nicest camping environmnents I have seen
- To do some fun sloping at Los Banos Creek Reservoir on the way home
This year I'll bring something for the potluck too!

Yup, my trusty and well abused Nova II. Ya know, I never seem to be amazed at this little plane. Just when I think it won't make it through a task time, it will spite me and take off running! I probably do more low level saves with it than my DLG.
This plane is actually made from the outer wing panels of the Onyx, and the TE is cut for flaps and ailerons instead of just ailerons. That being the case, I was just thinking, what if they took the outer panels of a JW and made the 2-meter wings from those! Awesome thought, heh?

Remember the fun is just being there and the flying is a added bonus. The CVRC boys at Visalia always put on a great time. Also if you have some free time help out with the winch's or in the landing zone.
