August bank Holiday 2008 meant that the Ellesmere Port Model Boat show was again upon us, once upon a time it was at the Canal boat museum, now it is at the EPIC centre in Ellesmere port town centre, though somewhat smaller than the older event, it still has its loyal following.
the show managed to fill one hall of the complex, with the Bring and Buy taking up the other hall, the swimming pool was also in use from 12:30 till 17:00. during the show, Paul Brassington's submarine decided to go on strike and sit on the bottom of the pool, luckily it was only half way down the pool, where the water is around 4 ft deep. (the last 1/4 is 10 feet deep to allow for diving. after sailing with the smaller cable on my towed array, I decided to extend the cable to give around 10 feet of let-out, so thats around 1000 scale feet. and fully spooled out, it takes some turning around, with the drag quite notable on the ship.

last few pics from saturday.
(joys of borrowing internet service of where I am staying whilst at the show).
one thing i have noticed is how much an effect that 12 feet of line has spooled out from the drum, seemed to pull on the ship, so heaven knows what its like for a real ship with anything upto 4km of wire out behind the stern

Looks like a great display of boats and some fun was had at the pool!
It is amazing how much drag a little wire can create! ;) is that the first time you have let the whole spool go?

yep, i specially extended the spool, it originally has a 3ft of wire on it, now it has enough to go to the bottom of a 10ft deep pool whilst underway.
the fin on the top of the unit also helps it keep straight, so no matter what angle it enters the water at, it will swing around to adopt a nose-first attitude in the water. it is not something for murky water

Aero, to prevent the ship having too much of a problem I have engaged the dual rate as well so when the unit goes into the water, the motors run at a reduced speed, this reduces water flow over the rudder, so requiring powered steering to turn, utilizing the motors for turning.
I imagine the real ones work in a similar manner

Hi Ghost,
That rather fast boat which looks like a life boat, do you have any more details on it how big it is and what's powering it. It may be the ticket for my Kingfisher.
Regards
Nick

Hi Nick, yep it is a lifeboat, done by Models by Design, however not sure on what type it is. power comes frm twin jet drives. as for size, its somewhere between 3 and 4 feet long, (just slightly larger than my najade)

The mystery submarine being handled by the vendor is a Resoultion class, ex-R&R moulding. Nice boat, good to see it back in production.
