I have some boat plans that don't have a scale on them.
I'm trying to estimate the dimensions of the boat (and the scale used) based on the size of the life ring shown.
I'm not sure what diameter one of those life rings is. I'm estimating it's 19".
Is there a standard size for life rings or do these things vary in size? :(

If possible, it's better to use a door height, and
use a standard six foot tall person as your base.
Life rings do vary in their size and in for the
year they were manufactured.

What are the plans and what is the boat????? Umi is correct about both liferings and doors.

Here's the problem: this boat doesn't seem to have any doors.
I have a printout. As soon as I get this thing scanned, I'll post it.

My guesstimate now is that it's about 37 feet...

If you post an image, there has to be somebody who subscribes to this forum that might recognize it, and give you an answer---.

Are there handrails? Assume about 3', scale off that, then assume the actual scale is a nearby convenient whole number.
What type of boat is it?

Seems to be longer than a runabout, smaller than a yacht. Not sure what you call it (noobie here). ;)
Downloaded the original plans from this website: http://www.mo-na-ko.net/lode-planky2.htm#Delfin
(I think my original estimate of 37 feet was too long)

If that motor is 550 size the approx. length of the model would be 24 to 26 inches long and most likely 1 inch to the foot scale. I base this on the length of the motor shown ,a little over 1'' and the length of a 550 at about 2 1/4'' long or twice the size of the one in the drawing. Height of cabin from deck approx. 3'', depth of keel from deck approx. 5'' These are just guestimates on size based on the motor size as I said above. If the motor used was say a speed 400 the boat would be smaller,if a 700 bigger. I can't pull up the web site so this is using the side view shown.

Couldn't you base the scale off of the cleat size? Those are odd cleats for a smaller boat but I'm sure real ones exist in a 'small boat' size to base it off of.

Good idea. Went to a website of a that sells fancy deck bollards (stainless steel). They have three sizes:

Nanaimo Marine Centre

Baby - Length 305mm/12" Height 125mm/5" Base Length 200mm/8" Base Width 98mm/4" Max Load 10 ton

Small Length 445mm/17.5" Height 157mm/6.25" Base Length 318mm/12.5" Base Width 138mm/5.5" Max Load 17 ton

Medium - Length 540mm/21" Height 183/7.25" Base Length 420mm/16.5" Base Width 192mm/7.5" Max Load 25 ton

When I plug that data into the dimensions I get from the drawing I get:
Using "Baby" bollards: 27 ft long
Using "Small" bollards: 37.1 ft long
Using "Medium" bollards: 51 ft long

The 51 and 37.1 feet just seem too big, so I guess the length is close to 27 feet (which is what Charlie suggested)

Enlarging the title block, I get the following dimensions. delka (length) = 500mm = 20 inch, sirka (width) 104mm = 4.16 inch and ponor (height) = 57mm = 2.28 inches. These dimensions are assuming that the measurements equal the measurements in parenthesis. You could enlarge them to the size you want at a copy store. Assuming you wanted to make the model to the length suggested above at 1" = 1'-0", the dimensions would be length 27 inches, width 5.62 inches and height 3.08 inches which would make a nice model size. Hope this helps. Jerryj98501

Thanks Jerry. It's good to see that you also came up with 27 feet (27 inch at 1/12th scale).

I think I'll go for the 27 inch. One thing I didn't mention earlier is that I did want to go for 1/12th scale.

One more question; what's the "official" name for this type boat?

A sport pleasure craft of some sort. The odd part is the nearly vertical freeboard at the bow to my eyes. I have no idea what it is.

So, three points guesses it at about 27" at inch to foot. That would be a good enough educated guess for me too... :D
