Will a 2.4Ghz style "spread spectrum" transmitter work ok with boats?
I was thinking about doing a fast electric hydro.
I can't see why it would not work, but I thought I would ask.

Yes.
Yes, but with certain reservations...
Some, but not all, have been having problems with 2.4's in boats...
Do a search for 2.4 on here, especially in the fast electrics forum..

from what I've read about the spektrum radios in particular is that the earlier DX2 versions had problems with water and skipping signals where the DX3 versions are rock solid.I have a DX3R on my retrieval boat and it's great and hasn't skipped a beat.

I use a Futaba FASST 2.4 system in several boats with great success. Boats range from a 24 inch FE Sport hydro to a 45 inch mono (gas and FE versions). The big FE mono can do over 80 mph. Again no issues in any size boat I run, either gas or FE.
I use a mix of both the 603FF and 603FS receivers and have not observed any difference in performance. The 603FS has a second internal antenna, but like I said, it does not seem to matter. At least not in any of my boats.
The radio I have is the 3PM FASST 2.4
