View Full Version : Discussion Generic Fuselage - as opposed to the PERFECT Fuse?...

I've been poking around my shop lately, clearing out some of the dingy corners. All sorts of things have come out of the dark, from the usual dust bunnies and missing tools to - eh, whats this?!! - a built up wing and tail!!

I forgot about that one. It's left over from some project that never went the distance. It's a 57" span, constant chord, polyhedral glider set-up, meant for a 1/2A size motor glider.

Well, I wanted to mate it with a suitable fuse, sort of a Frankenstein affair. I'd really like a built up pod and boom, something like the Zaic Thermic idea. This would be a "down the line" project, giving the old wing some new life. Maybe it'll even get into the air this time around....

I said I'd like a pod & boom fuse, but I can find little to help me with a DIY design. I have a ton of balsa in the stash and am not really set up to roll booms and glass nose cones, as of now. So that's my limits.

Maybe someone can show a pic of their Thermic 50X plan, wherein the pod/boom structure is detailed? Or something similar?

Thanks

I'll bet you could roll a killer boom out of hardwood veneer or 1/32" birch ply. Without a lot of special equipment. It wouldn't be as small as a carbon boom, but I bet it could be made to look very nice.

A guy in our club used to make 1/32" ply fuses that were sort of a taco shell, like a Dodgson design. The ply would sort of be u shaped in cross section and I guess he filled in the top with balsa. If you've seen some of the Dodgson gliders you know this can look pretty nice.
