I am trying to set up tracking for some adventure racers in mountains way out of cell phone range.

Previously for one team we used Iridium Sats but that is out of our money league for this one.

I was thinking that getting some aerocom modems or similar and attaching GPS to them might be the way to go, then setting up fixed stations in the mountains to relay that information to the real world??

APRS was another thought, but a data network of our own to pass messages between fixed points as well as tracking is appealing.

Thoughts, views, please get off this thread???

Someone out there will have a bright idea, I know it.

Then we might have a solution for wide area tracking of mulitple UAV's there we go I bought it back on topic.

It's a little early for this one, but you may want to ask the same ?'s in the FPV thread

Garmin Rhino GPS? I got a few 110 for the family and they tell you where everybody is. Cheap too. 5 mile range enough?

Yes I have been thinking about them, not sure how you get all units displaying in one place (on the web) and if you can get each one to send on other position reports.

The race is taking place at 10,000' in extreamly bumpy terrain

Not on the web but every time you transmit on GMRS radio part the little built-in map is updated. Different symbol for each person. Tested 1 mile on FRS, 3.5 mile on GMRS, 12-15 mile from Cessna 150. Terrain don't matter but probably some reverse engineering required (subsonics) to get the info on the internet.

Cartenav.com has high end.

Also recently a unicycle race / tour in Nova Scotia used a form of GPS tracking device so that entrants could have their position updated on the web for those following the event on line.
