View Full Version : Discussion How high are your winch starts?

When trying to optimize my winch starts with my Supra I was wondering what altitude others are gaining with any model in winch starts?
In 5 – 7 m/s (11.2 mph) wind and with line length of 150 m (492 feet) and a 1,4 mm (0.55 inch) line I get maybe 230 m (755 feet) in height if I don’t mess anything up. If I do mess something up I probably loose 10-20 m (33-66 feet).
What do you get?

Am I the only one who is trying to optimize?

No you are not the only one :D
230m is ok with a 300m line (150m to turnaround). Smaller F3B style planes go higher in wind, but it is normally not very important in competitions. If you have right tactics, 200m+ altitude is plenty to catch a thermal.
I would rather optimize my launch speed. How much time you need to get to 150 meters altitude? How is the zoom after 3 seconds in line?

You are right :)
But I would like your data for launching as well :o

I just purchased an altimiter. I don't know my launch heights but will let you know as soon as I get some readings.

Mine are usually 190-200. Can't beat Tuomo :)

In normal conditions (whatever they are :) ) I can launch to 225-230 meters. Personal best (logged) is 248m.
150 meters to turnaround.

I got my best yesterday, 252 m in 8 m/s wind. I love the sound of the zoom:O)
