This is my official build log for my Hobby people F-16 and it will be the new test bed for the Wicked EDF 70mm fan and motor. Here are some photos of the EDF fan unit and motor installed. The EDF fan unit and motor weight in at 4.2 ounces.
Steps done so far.
1) Mounted motor
2) Balanced the rotor dynamiclaly in the EDF unit
3) Removed mounting tabs on EDF unit
My Eagletree was showing 750 watts on startup then settled around ~630 watts after 20-30 seconds. This was using a 4S 2200 lipo.
More pictures to come :D

Here is the mods I did to the taileron mounting area. I used 1/16 ply to stiffen it up on both sides.

Is this a new motor and fan unit that you'll have on your page? Any numbers on this new fan with various motor? And number on this new motor with various fans?

It will be a new setup listed on the webpage. My plan was to find an alternative to the HET6904/2W combo that was lighter and would give reasonable performance without breaking the bank. I just received a small number of motors today (I only had one for testing). I do have some fan units so will be putting 5 sets together for now and testing them.

Very nice! Looking forward to it! Any 6904/2W-20 combos for 4S?

this was really interesting, i am just about to put my F-16 together with an inrunner motor with a 5100kv, but this setup gets hot on 4s. It would be nice to try out the motor you have got here instead. Any info on the specs and when it will be available???

Hi Don, just discovered your site and this thread. I am so excited.....
I just got my ef16 and was very pleased with its performance. I have gotten some starmax planes and not impressed at all.
I was looking for something I can afford and get good performance.. Staying with a 3 cell battery and not burning 75 amps in flight.
I am getting on my stock plane useing a tp 2100 pro lite bat.- around 280 watts at about 24 amps. I can keep up with my buds multiplex fun jet, somewhat...
Always looking for more.
So... get going............... :)
Can't wait for your results,
The only thing I don't like is the way the tailaerons are so close to the ground, have to be careful to land it in short grass.
Thanks for your site and you........
p.s. are you going to use the tube around the fan unit like the stock set up?
I thought that was interesting, nice smooth air flow which makes a big difference in performance..........

The Starmax models do need more power than stock. Most people use the Wicked 4800 in the stock fan on 3S, gets you in the 350-380 watt range. The real problem on the Starmax an similar is the modela are not the cleanest. Thick trainling edges and oversized ducting. The HP F-16 is actually pretty darn good.

Where you at on the build and where is the motor on your site?
Did you use the plastic around the fan houseing?
I just love mine......flys great fast or slow.
I did have a strange problem.
When I went to glide the nose came up a lot.
I have heard all kinds of answers but the bottom line is I just mixed throttle with elevator , put slight down in and it does fine. Nice glide path. I do fly my birds slightly tail heavy. Like it that way and makes a very nice landing.

The Don,
I'm thinking of ordering the 5400kv motor for my my Phase 3 F-16. I will be using the XF Fan in mine. Do I order the motor with the "Standoff adapter/no rotor plug" or "Standoff with XF/eflite plug" ? I just wanted to be 100%
sure before buying this. Thanks!

Don,
Is this the same motor as your 5400kv? I believe the specs are similar.

Either way actually, since you already have the XF fan you do not need the extra XF/Eflite plug unless you want a spare.

It is not the same but looks very similar. My motors are 26mm OD (so more torque) and my shaft is 3mm not 1/8".

I ended up using the SF/Eflite 3 bladed 64mm fan on 4S as the 70mm setup eventually failed my bench run test. I though I posted photos here of the SF version build but I guess I did it in the F16 thread so I will have to repost. What happened is I basically ran the 70mm motor WOT on the bench in the EDF at about 700 watts and after 3 minutes or so it overheated, so that is why I am not selling it. I do have a few extra of those motors but basically I am not selling them. So I went to the Wicked 4000 on 4S with the SF fan and in my F16 and I got 100 mph on that setup so I was happy.

hey don, mave here
i had a problem with that fan. the cone infront of the flat headed bolt has a hard time finding center and would cause vibration. if aggitated enough, the cone will splite in two and destroy the fan. those are the fans that come with the exceed f-18's.
i just don't trust them. going to send the motor to you tomorrow. the 4000 kv.

You mean the 70mm 5 blade fan is the one that failed?

yes, that be the one. i guess no one else had a problem with it, i know it would be a matter of time before my blue angel goes. it has the stock set up.
don can you send me a picture of what you use to balance the ducted fan blades.
