I am doing some experimenting and need a downlink with very fast data downlink rate to download data from my UAV fuselage to my laptop on the ground. I tried a product from Mircohard, but it didn't perform at the advertised downlnink rates of "up to 54Mbps".
Does anyone have sources for downlink products with fast download rates that will fit into a 4"-5" diameter fuselage?

Digi.com has the stuff you're looking for.
their 9xtend radio modem is available either as RS232 or USB. Has the speed and up to 40 mile range :)

I don't think the 9xtend can get anywhere near 54Mbps though.

If you need this data rate (I assume you need this for digital video?), you will have to use a wireless LAN device (linksys, dlink,...). Your best bet would be to get a pair of directional (patch) antennas for your ground station.

Even Wifi doesn't really achieve 54mbps. That's more advertising spin than anything. It can do 54mbps in very short bursts, but the total throughput is much less than that.

802.11N will do 74Mbps throughput (248 Max burst). 802.11G will do 19Mbps throughput (54 Max burst).

80211g is a pretty good option, better distance performance than 802.11b as it uses OFDM, check out OpenWrt. You might be able to use a router as a flight computer, that and you could set up a mesh network easily. 2.4G Amps, LNA's and Antennas are readily available and cheap.
Have Fun
