If you're a night owl like me, the 1933 movie "Tugboat Annie" with Marie Dressler and Wallace Beery, will be shown in about 40 minutes (at 1:15 am Central time) on the Turner Classic Movie channel (TCM). I havent seen it, but it just might have some period harbor scenes and a steam-powered tugboat in it. :)

Well, I caught this message just in time to turn on the tube and watch it from the beginning.
The first part of the movie, about 15 minutes, was okay. It showed tugboats from the era in the harbor, heading out, and towing a stalled schooner up in Puget Sound.
After that it was extremely difficult to watch. The two main characters are insufferable. It is so corny, and so old fashioned in its mores. I tried and tried to stay interested, but finally at the time around the Captains party where Marie Dressler was getting tipsy I had to switch it off.
There had been only one additional short tugboat segment in all that time.

Then, regrettably you missed seeing the steam tug 'Narcissus' at the end of the movie resplendent in fresh new paint, looking eminently model-able.

the steam tug 'Narcissus'
Which an old book I have tells me was originally named "Wallowa", built in 1889 in Portland OR... Later it became the "Arthur Foss" and was temporarily "Narcissus" for the filming of the movies... :)

I think it would be good if someone got the film on DVD, cut out everything except the tugboat scenes, and re-produced the DVD. :D

I agree, Tom. Some of the characters were pretty 'broadly' played, but the main actors/actresses were really popular in those days. (Um, so I hear.)

Too bad about the movie. I have a collection of TBA stories here on my shelf. They are great stories and will "give ya an edgy-me-k-shun" on maritime law while providing some fun reading. I highly recommend the book. :)

Kmot,
"The two main characters are insufferable. It is so corny, and so old fashioned in its mores."
... Well, the thing is sort of old, and 'things' have changed in roughly 75 years :)

The tugboat in that movie "narcissus" which was acually the "arthur foss" is still in existance and still in operating condition. Its homeported here in Seattle. I believe the tug still had its original steam power plant when the movie was filmed before it was converted to diesel. So check this out http://www.nwseaport.org/arthur.html.
