Is there a number of pixels threshhold over which the site computer posts a picture as a Thumbnail which the viewer can enlarge by clicking on it and below which the computer posts it as an Image which can't be enlarged? It seems my Lyman pictures that were optimized and were less than about 12 KB came out as Images. Also a rookie question. Do the number of pixels of a picture increase as more things are in the image? Would a picture of a blank wall have less pixels than the exact same dimension picture of a landscape?

No, yes, and sort of. :p

If you can select a photo size in your camera, always select a very high quality picture. It will be large, IE a lot of pixels. But then you need to resize the photo for the internet using your photo editing software that came with your camera.

For example, I shoot pictures at around 5MB to 6MB in size, and pixels are 3264x2448 which could be made into a poster 40 inches wide.

I then resize them for uploading to the internet, and my chosen size is 1080x810 pixels which could be blown up to 15 inches wide. Those are what I upload here all the time.

Also, it is important to note that DPI, or Dots Per Inch are not usable on the internet beyond 72 DPI. All a larger DPI accomplishes is making a larger file size, and no increase in quality will be discernable on the internet.
