has anyone ever made one of those trees that full scale drags use where it
is yellow then geen. this would be cool in to make for RC parking lot drags.
and to take it a step further could you make it sio it senses if yoy leave
the line too fast and light up a red LED. that would be so sick. if anyone
has ifo. please let me know i would love to build this.

Check out Race America, they have one for sale! www.raceamerica.com rather
pricey though. There is one used at the San Antonio and Dallas drags every
weekend, weather permitting, it's too cool.

I built a tree a few years ago. The tree itself was PVC and about 2
feet high. The control box ran off a 12v battery (usually a nearby
car) and displayed the RTs, ETs, and trap speeds on an LCD. Pretty
easy to use, just push a button to select the start mode (pro or
sportsman), then push a button to start the tree. It allowed deep
staging and would redlight you if you staged too deep after the start
button was pushed. The finish line was a couple of laser pointers
shooting at a target between the lanes that reflected the beams back
to the tree. The only thing it wouldn't do was bracket racing. I don't
have it anymore, but if anyone wants one I could be convinced to build
another. Cost about $300 to build, most of which was the
microcontroller used to handle the timing and control of the lights.

i wan't to build it myself and i don't want it to be that pricy for mine it
does not need to display times. just a light to light on the winning persons
tree side. Thanx

In that case, do some research on 555 timers and power transistors.
With about $20 worth of chips, resistors, etc. you should be able to
build a box that will handle the timing of the lights. Less if you get
samples from National, Maxim, etc. Would take some simple digital
logic to handle redlights, but nothing too complicated. The easist way
would be to use an Oopic or Basic Stamp. I've done it that way, but it
wouldn't handle the output I needed, so I had to go to something more
complicated. For your project, however, an Oopic would work fine. Just
takes a little VB programming (not tough).
