View Full Version : Discussion are all 550 speed motors created equal?

I know nothing about this which is why I ask. I've decided I need to replace the motors in my boat which are 550 speed 7.2v and I just called up my LHS. They only do aircraft and cars but they do carry some 550 speed motors. They say one is 12 turn and one is 17. He says the shafts are 1/8th inch wide or something like that. What I want to know is can I replace the ones in my boat with the ones at the store or will the ones in the store burn out or have some other catastrophe if i try to hook them up in my boat.

edit: this just in - he says that the higher number of turns means less power. The ESC i have and have just bought a replacement for is the one that comes stock in the proboat pt109. Interestingly Proboat does not give specs for it at all. I have no idea if it can handle the 12 turn motor and I have no idea what the stock motors are because again, no specs.

I'm thinking the safest thing would be just to try and replace the motors with duplicates of same. Is there any other way to go?

We need to know a lot more about your motor.
Brand name, volts your are using, prop size, ESC make and model and the details about your boat.

Your LHS (I own and operate one (41 years)) will have a number of 7.2 to 8.4 volt 540 motors with various turns rating from about 10T to 27T. We keep two 550 motors (vary little difference) mainly for the Traxxas electric cars and deep V boats.

This is the number of turns of wire on each pole of the armature. Less turns = more amps and more power and more RPMs. Good RC car motors will have some ratings on the package that may help.

Tell us more please.

thanks!

Ok the props are 3-blade 35mm raboesch brass props.

here are the specs on the ESC - just found them on proboat's website:

Forward: yes
Reverse: yes
Continuous Maximum Current: 60 amps
Input Voltage: 6-9.6 volts
Input Connector Types: Tamiya
Output Connector Types: Bullet
Momentary Peak Current: 70 amps
BEC Voltage: 5 volts
PWM Frequency: 2940 Hz

proboat doesnt give any specs on the stock motors at all :(

The batteries I'm using are 7.2v 4200mah nicads. I run a pair at a time as the boat was designed to do.

You did not tell me the model name of the boat but n checking ProBoat they appear to use the nsame 550 in several of their boats.

I check for a replacement ProBoat motor and they are listed as back ordered until December 2008.

I suggest that you get a 20 turn Traxxas Stinger motor part number TRA1275 as a quick replacement or go with a 19 to 21 turn quality car motor as a relacement. Shaft size should be the same.

Note that Traxxas makes a 550 Titian motor 15 turn that will be too much for your speed controller. Used in the E-Maxx.

Sorry, the boat is a Proboat PT109.

How much variation in performance and power consumption is there between 19, 20 and 21 turn motors?

the Traxxas Stinger motor is a 540 speed. How are those different from the 550's? Are tehy faster? slower?

edit:
The boat's stock motors spin to the left as their default. The Traxxas motors listings dont say which direction they spin in as a default. Does it matter with a car motor?

edit:
I've been bugging sellers on fleabay about the Stinger and they say they don't have any information, that I should look at what the manufacturer says about it. The manufacturer doesnt say much though
