And you thought this was a bad thing.....

Too many trips to the hobby store for springer, and other boat parts.. Now I get to build this one too :) The fleet is slowly growing :D

Neat! I've had my eye on that one.
I think it's built with a single layer of mahogany planks? If so, you might consider an underlayment of basswood or balsa to better support the final planking, and an outer covering of fiberglass for durability.

Yes it is a single layer of mahogany planks over the stringers and framing. I am planning on putting at least 1 layer of epoxy with cloth on the outside, and epoxy the entire inside. Possibly put a layer of cloth inside too. We will see when I get that far, depending on the strength of the hull. It did come with a brushed motor and I am debating on upgrading this to brushless. Set the transmitter to dual rate, one for scale speed the other for fun. :D

Be careful when sanding this boat. My dad built it and there are some parts on the top deck that are mahogany veneer over plywood. :( Very easy to sand through and then you have a mess    . Believe me as I have seen it. I forgot what parts they are but the veneer is paper thin. He ended up planking it with leftover mahogany from dumas kits and it turned out fine.

Yes, I see the West Systems epoxy there!

Moving along at a slow pace. But at least it is moving. :p

Without wishing to sound too foolish....

Would it be practical to skin this beautiful frame in 1/32 ply and then just cosmetically veneer the planks to the skins. The risk of leakage would be much reduced.

I had to decide between two model shipways kits that were staring me in the face a while back, and the Speakeast Rum Runner won out...but not by much :)

Good to see you're good with jigsaw puzzles.
Progress looks good. You won't need to cloth the inside; a coat of epoxy finished with a coat of paint should be just fine.

I have finished the bottom planking and started on the side planking. Sealed the bottom and trimmed the planks. Wondering how I am going to seal the bottom of the top planks when I get to that stage. I will figure something out, any suggestions would be appreciated.

I seal them before gluing them in place, thin the epoxy 50/50 with denatured alcohol and coat the planks before gluing. then sand them smooth, and glue with epoxy. The deck planks may not be completely sealed but they will not ever be in contact with water unless something horrible happens. the other thing that you could do is bend an acid brush and use it to paint the under side, the only problem with this is that you could get heavy spots.

By the way how do you like the kit so far?
