Can anyone recommend a high torque starter for a 75 - 90 size

Robbe 120. Unfortunately it only seems to be available from Robbe now but
it only costs around £45 shipped.
Don't get taken in by the Robbe UK 'Hi' torque starter - it is a sack of
shit rebadged with a couple of wires sticking out :)

Sullivan do one. You can drive it with 24 volts and it'll turn over a
Scania:-) It'll also bend a con rod if you hydraulic the engine.

Like Beav say, Sullivan also do one which costs about £65 and will run on 24
volt. Not really worth it unless you plan on actually running it off 24v,
even though it will go on 12v. You could also try the slighlty cheaper
Sullivan which is about £45 and is meant to run on 12v. I have this one and
the Robbe - the Robbe is better IMO

My standard one works for me too Will and I don't actually like the 24 volt
version. If the engine won't start with the standard one, something's not
right. Engines don't come harder to turn over than Rossi 60,' or Webra 75
ABC's and mine pisses all over both of them engines.

Have to say since dumping my Flightbox and battery and using 2 x 6cell
nicad packs piggy back on the stock starter it has heaps more guts.
Not to mention no frikin cord hanging off

Went to the model shop that was the problem.
Recommended to a JP POWERtorque value +
Lasted 3 starts.
The hydro-locked and warm leads.
Now no-go.
Link to ronlund produces fatal error - I might be new to the hobby but
didn't know I was that bad.
Any Uk link would be appreciated

Hi there

I'm using the high torque starter (the bigger one) from thunder tiger for my
raptor 60 (tt70 engine,+ fixed to have higher compression). the specs says
it starts engines up to 1.80.
so far it starts my heli well.my previous kavan "planetary" starter didn't
do the job.

The link probably wrapped over 2 lines, you need to copy and past both lines
to your browser.
But to help you even further I have a tiny url for you:
http://tinyurl.com/5b5m

And if this still doesn't work you can do a search on Ricks site (on the
online shop page, not the main page) for partnumber: SUL603

Like Will said...........

Next time you give it a start measure volts at the starter, you loose
most in the leads and unless you have thick 50 to 80 amp leads you
need to keep them very short.
Piggy back NicAds does the job, 14.4v to the starter with leads only
10cm long will remove your lead problem.

I use 2 x 7.2volt RC car sticks (1700mAh SubC I think) they fit side
by side on the starterr nicely.
K&S actually sells a braket set to fit these batteries to the starter.

I thought about cutting the output shaft off of my old burnt out Sullivan starter and using it in my 24 volt Firestorm drill. According to the specs the Sullivan Dyna tron starter has 600 in oz of torque and the Firestorm drill has 445in lb of torque. If you convert the in lbs to in oz which our starters are rated at you will find that the drill has 7120 in oz of torque. That should start any rc engine out there and when you are done flying you can come home and work on the honey do list with it. :p

Any idea what the gear ratio of the drill is ? I bought one of those twin-700
powered geared startes with the self-contained power packs and found that the
torque was fine for all my engines but the speed they were turned over at was
too slow to get a reliable start.

That would be my concern as well.. I can turn over a big block Chevy
engine by hand, but nowhere near fast eough to get it to start.

Now that, I'd like to watch! It would be my luck that one of those
cylinders would light off at the wrong time with unfortunate results! ;-)

One option to use with the Sullivan Dynatron is a lipo pack. I've got a
friend who's heavily into electric helicopters. He's got a couple of
Miniature Aircraft Ion's and fly's them with a pair of 5S lipos connected in
series. As the batteries start to age they loose capacity over time and
eventually he retires them. I, and a number of friends of his have been
fortunate enough to be donated one of his retired 5S batteries and they make
wonderful starter batteries with the Sullivan Dynatron. Fully charged, the
5S is 22 volts which the Dynatron will handle easily. The first time we he
used one, it spun the **** out of his YS 90. The engine didn't seem to want
to start but when he let go of the starter button, the engine spooled "down"
and started idling nicely. The starter was spinning the engine well above
the engines idle speed.

If you know someone who's got an old one they won't mind getting rid of,
that's the best way. A battery that's gotten too weak to fly the helicopter
reliably has still got plenty of punch to use as a starter battery and the
Sullivan Dynatron has plenty of torque to spin the "you know what" ouf of a
90 size glo engine. The other option would be to buy a new one. Not cheap
I know but you wouldn't need another starter batter for a "very" long time!

FWIW! ;-0
Fly Safe,
Steve R.

It could also twist the crankshaft into a pretzel and tie the con-rod into a
knot if the motor suffers a hydraulic lock too.
