I've trained for a while now using a TT trainer, and then to an Avistar. I'm looking to build my first plane and was thinking of either a Tower Uproar or Fun 51. What do you guys think, right planes for my first tail dragger/fun fly, or should I go with a Stik or low wing option?

You mentoned the Uproar and Fun 51.I have had both of them ,They fly ok.The Fun51 is built like a tank and is heavy. The Uproar is really nimble.Along the same lines is the GP Dazzler I realy like mine.It flies better than the other two.It has a little longer tail moment and flies really stable. It will also knife all day long. All three of these airplanes weren't desiged to do any reall 3D stuff. But they are really economical palnes that are fast and nimble. If you want a 3D airplane I will leave it up to the experts they will chime in soon...3D airplanes are a lot lighter than these, and are designed to aerobatics at a lot slower speeds than the above mentioned r-planes.

When you say "build" are you looking for plans, a kit, or an ARF to assemble? There are so many good options available today. Are you looking for something in a certain price range? Got an engine picked out already?

Thinking I want to build a kit over the winter, for a 40-46 2-stroke engine, not ready for 3D, just want a nice fun fly acrobatic plane, low, mid, or high wing. Looking for suggestions.

I would go with the GP Dazzler. Its light, aerobatic, economical, easy to build, the landing gear will take a beating, good hardware, lands likea dream...A good 40 will fly it perfectly.I have an L.A.40 in mine.It has more than enough power. An ABC ballbearing engine turns it into a rocket. Its hard to believe with the fat wing but mine flies like a pattern ship .It rolls straight and true, does good stall turns, does perfect inside outside loops.Spins nice, lands slow, flies inverted with very little down elev,it will do knife edge flight beutifully..it does all this with an LA.40...I have many other types of airplanes but for some reason I fly this one the most.I am thinking about ordering another one...

I'm really thinking about either the Dazzler or it's cousin the Uproar. With the short wingspan and light weight, how does it do in windy conditions? Thanks for the input!

the dazzler is a pile.
the uproar is a little better, kit built is better.
if you want a fun plane that flys great, and you can move into 3d with get the mojo.
40 size profile, epoxy form tube through fuse makes it 10 times stronger than the other planes mentioned. the kit builds really fast, even for a first timer. it will fly good with any 46 engine. standard servos.
i've been flying mine over 2 years with multiple dorks and very minimal repairs.

Everybody has thier own definition of the word pile...And ....flying styles...
I have flown everything from the the MOJO to giant scale extra 300 aircraft.
I just like the little Dazzler .
By the way Baja Dude,I am putting together a MagicV2,are you familiar with it?
Are there any weak spots in it..Im going to put a TT36 on it
And let me know if it is a PILE! hehe
This guy loves his MOJO as much as I like my Dazzler ...So everybody has thier own flying style...its a good quality kit for a sport flyer

Jimmy P, how do these short wing models handle windy conditions. I had someone tell me I should go with a 60" low wing if I want to fly in the wind.

The Dazzler is not bad in the wind.It handles it good for a plane of its size .
The lighter the airplane the more the wind throws it around.
Yes a low wing penetrates the air better. And if it has a thinner wing it will too.If you could land the Avistar in windy conditions then you will have no problem with the Dazzler. The dazzler is a really stable airplane despite the way it looks. The wing is not that short compared to similar designs.I know how it is .There are so many r-planes and so many different designs nowadays its hard to choose one..Then there is the Ugly-Stick ,It has been around for ages.Just about everybody has had one in one form or another...Its like the old standby airplane, or old faithfull. In the 60m sized low wing the Goldberg Tiger 60 is good, even better is The Bridi Killer Kaos..This airplane is as smooth as it gets .Lands like dream in high winds.....

The Killer Kaos,,they also have some other nice planes.
Joe Bridi was a brilliant designer. He retired ,I think, and these people took over.
Phil Kraft designed the Ugly Stick back in the 60's and is still a poular design
Tower sells the Stick don't get the big, one get the one designed for a 60.
Tower also sells the Goldberg Tiger 60..Not as good in the wind as the Kaos..
