View Full Version : Helicopters for only $349
James
Feb 01, 2003, 07:02 AM
Our store will be launching February 15th. You will be able to purchase a
helicopter with everything you need including engine and radio for only
$349. If our shipment from Taiwan arrives on time, you will also be able to
purchase RC gas-powered cars for only $169 complete and planes for only $189
complete.
For the first six months we intend to destroy our competition (Tower
Hobbies) by making zero profit. They will never come close to the prices we
can offer.

and once the competition has been annihilated? What do you plan to do then?
This kind of business may well be beneficial to you, and to buyers
initially. It is not fair on other businesses, and the end result to the
buyer will not be so special once the 'competition' has been annihilated and
you have a monopoly on the marketplace.
If you execute your business plan with the same attention to detail you have
shown in this announcement, then you'll be fucked from day one - I mean who
the hell are you? What's the name of your business? What brands and products
will you stock? Where can we find the website to whet our appetite, or place
advanced orders? This wonderful land of joy and buying opportunity will be
ready to serve all our r/c needs in only two weeks, right? and you haven't
even told us who you are.
Anyhow I think you might find there is at least a small element of loyalty
within this game, not just with local hobby shops, but also with trusted
businesses 'friends' such as Cyberheli. I think it's fair to say Cyberheli
can be seen as a friend to most of their customers, from all I have read
going back through years of Usenet archives, and current opinion.
If you were selling Computer Software, then fair enough, you'd be doing
exactly the same as Action (dot com) and Jungle (dot com), who were selling
Windows XP and such like at *below* cost on day 1 of the software's release.
Well anyway thanks for the announcement Mr ???? - sorry, you neglected to
leave your surname.
Good luck.

Any business can sell a product cheaper. But an excellant business backs up
the sale with service and replacement parts quickly .Can you promise that ?
Dont forget a businesses reputation

As far as I'm concerned, their business reputation is ruined because of
their statement!
I doubt if they can sell with a zero profit. I wonder if they will have
a toll free number to call? A bank of phones with sales and service
representatives standing by? A return policy?
What about inventory? I think this is probably a guy selling out of his
house and can't come close to Tower Hobbies in any business manner. I'm
not a big Tower Hobbies buyer, but I know I can call and usually get
anything I need and have it delivered within 5 days.

supply equal quality cheaper?
I doubt it....
What brand names will these guys be supplying? Would anyone outside of
Taiwan have heard of them?

What kind of Store posts a statement like this, without giving store name,
brand names etc...? Missed marketing opportunity or just stupidity?
Do these guys think that 1 small store can have greater buying power than
Tower?

I wouldn't worry about Tower much. They aren't going anywhere. Kind of

I'm going to take a look at what you have, but trying to put Tower out
of business isn't going to be easy unless you have a couple of million

That's nice, a chopper for a low price! This is what
some folks call a "Flash in the Pan"! Lets just set back
and have a good look see if these big boys are still selling
anything, much less still around in a year or so!
I'll still stick with somebody that has been around for
decades, and has the spare parts for my old bird ready
on the shelf. Anybody in the business will tell you about
the hundreds of wanna-be shops that thought they could
take over, yeah, right!

That'll never happen. "James" is only in the entry level market (if he's in
ANY market that is) and it's very well supported world wide. One guy/shop
won't kill the competition world wide in the same way that one heli won't
kill a particular market sector. We've heard plenty of stories how the
Raptor would kill off all the 30 sized heli's, but it didn't manage it. We
heard how the 30 market would kill off the 60 market, but THAT didn't happen
either.

It looks like either the Lion series of heli's from Taiwan, or copies of the
Century Hawks (which began life as copies of the Lion series of heli's from
Taiwan) Whatever it is, it'll just be "A.N.Other heli at a knock down price.

'Til a faster, cheaper or better service comes along. Then Cyber will go the
way of ALL those who've gone before when the competition latches onto the
fact that competition IS about price for LOTS of beginners in this hobby.
Cyber (as good as they are) have realised that keeping their prices where
they have is a good way to gain "loyalty".

You're right Beav. I didn't for one minute think he would achieve what he's
setting out to. I just had issues about his business tactics, and plans to
kill off Tower. Sort of a moral outburst I suppose :)
I've never bought from either Tower or Cyberheli, but I still watch their
websites and read what others have to say. Apart from an absolutely huge
range of stock, the other thing that has stuck in my mind about Tower
Hobbies is their "Notes from tech. department:" notes at the bottom of many
item pages.
These are fantastic and date back years.. not sure how many years, but years
still :) This knowledge of their product & marketplace is something that can

There's many reasons why this James geezer should be ignored, but I just
felt an urge to have a go at his business tactics :)
p.s.
I hope you don't feel insulted that I haven't bitten your arm off at this
opportunity you've given me to come flying with you some time. I just
haven't/don't feel up to it yet :)
I hope the offer can remain open for a while. It's kind of as if Eddie Van
Halen had've offered to show me how he plays his guitar when I was 15. He
was god then, in my guitar years, and you're my heli god :)

Yes, we can get you replacement parts very quickly. In fact, we guarantee
that we will have parts in stock and they will ship within 24 hours or your

Jim, no we will not have toll-free numbers available. This increases our
cost which gets past on to the customer anyway. We figure that consumers
such as yourself would rather have a better price. Just having an 800 number
would require us to add on about $20 to each helicopter.

Yeah you're right on the loyalty thing too. I suppose none of us ever have
as much money as we would like to have, and with heli's being such an
expensive hobby, one does tend to be conscious of the costs when deciding on
what & where to purchase.
I think most of us fair people *want* to be 'loyal' and support our LHS, or
any other local private business for that matter, but they do have to be at
least close when it comes to being competitive on price.
I know people rave on about Cyberheli having rock bottom prices, and getting
stuff to them in like 1-2 days, from Hong Kong!, but the things that stuck
in my head were stories about Mr Cyberheli (sorry, forgotten his name) going
to the Thunder Tiger (or a.another company) head office / factory either on
business or because they were showing him around, and he mentioned in
passing that one of his customers had sent an engine back in for repair and
was still waiting for it to come back. Apparently after having waited two
months, the guy got his engine almost immediately after Mr Cyberheli's
mention of it, along with a letter of apology :)
That's cool. I don't think it was Thunder Tiger, might've been Enya or
someone, and I hope I'm not completely inaccurate on the story as it was
ages ago that I read it, but it just makes me think.. this guy is respected
in this industry, and is worthy of it too.

We are selling clones of Century. If you want brand name, I would recommend
purchasing elsewhere. If you want the same quality as Century but at half
the price, then we are the place to purchase.

Honestly, yes we do have greater buying power than Tower Hobbies. We are
funded by several VC firms and have commitments to capital of $50 million.

30 MINUTES is good in this industry Carl :-)
Get stuff from a Scottish sounding named company and it's down to 30
SECONDS.
You're ENGINE blew up? I've never heard of THAT happening so it must've been
run too lean/too rich/too hot/too cool/too often/not often enough, with no
oil/too much oil/the WRONG oil, no nitro/too much nitro.
You're RADIO doesn't work? I've never heard of THAT happening so you must've
reversed the polarity when you charged it.
You're BATTERIES won't charge? I've never heard of THAT happening, maybe
another case of reverse polarity.
Ah the joys of helicoptering:-)

Not at all. We've not had much opportunity to fly anyway. It's been a bit

That's true for about 99% of people in ANY hobby, although in this one,
there's the odd exception (Peter Wales take note:-)) This DOES make price a
major consideration and it's why Cyberheli is so popular among this happy
band. Excellent delivery times and great prices. If ANYONE can match that,
they'll do well until another "James" comes along and snatches the rug from
under.
>

Most of us have TRIED being loyal to our LHS, but it's they keep going tits
up and leaving us high and dry. How inconsiderate can these buggers be I
wonder:-) I know one of the reasons they DO go tits up is because of
overseas competition beating them hands down on prices, but when you see ads
for (as an example) an X-cell at 1200 dollars in the states and over here
it's 1900 QUID, loyalty quickly takes a back seat.
And I don't want to hear (or read about in magazines) the problems the shop
owners/dealers have or the reasons they offer to justify more than doubling
the price of an item. Look at the car industry now. Tey're having to do a
MAJOR re-think on pricing in this country, and it would've happened sooner
if buying a car was as simple as an "Add to cart" click on a mouse.

Yeah, but life's full of anecdotes like that. One man says another man did
this and everything's Ok. What SHOULD'VE happened though is Cyberheli
should've replaced the engine themselves and THEN sent the damaged one back
to TT. After all, they WERE the vendor and it's THEIR responsibility to sell
goods of merchantable quality, not the manufacturers to sort out retail
problems

Absolutely, but that's quickly forgotten when the shop next door starts
flogging the same gear (or gear of a similar type and same quality) for half
the price. Loyalty is nailed to the front of a chequebook:-)

I smell a rat here-- this is a hoax!
What right minded business would do this. If its pure profit these VC
companies are after then R/C helis are not the best market- especially if
you are cloning a Century. If i wanted a Century, I'd buy one. What the
markets need is innovation- if you're going do come into this field bring

Imagine a scenario where a company imports a "foreign" manufacturers
products for close on 20 years and has exclusive importation/distribution
rights and then "designs" and markets it's own "new" machine which looks,
measures, and FLIES so much like the originally imported design that it's
not even funny. Can you imagine that? Would you imagine that this company
would be successful?

We plan on selling 100 the first week of operation. At $349, we hope that
many others will join our hobby. Right now the price of entry keeps it from
expanding.

The VC market understands the differences between wholesale and retail. Once
we establish a good base of customers, we will then start with our own
designs. Right now, we have chosen a path that is easier to get off the
ground and that starts with cloning.
Our shipment from Taiwan has arrived today. We have received a total of 1000
kits and will be testing them for quality assurance purposes over the next
week.
Thank you in advance for your support.

I do have some bad news. As I previously mentioned, we received 1000
helicopters from Taiwan. We setup approx 20 for quality control purposes and
had 3 that did not pass our quality control. We are determining whether we
should launch on the 15th as promised or figure something else out.
Would love to know from members on this list if we sold the helicopters at
the same price but extended the warranty to two full years and provided 30
days crash protection would this be acceptable for taking the risk that you
may get a defective heli although it may not be likely.

Send us all the helicopters. We will QA them for you. If any of them
PASS the QA test we will send them back to you.

Buyer Beware!
Just some thoughts on my part.
This could be a real good deal, or a well planned rip off.
Consider this scenario:
I post to several hobby related newsgroups that I can sell a clone of a
quality helicopter with engine etc for only $349.00. I will also have
quality airplane and car packages available at low prices.
I state that I can beat out ANY competitors prices for similar quality RC
items (Tower)
I start a post stating my intentions months before the "final blow".
After a short period of time I post again stating that the deal has been
done, and the products are on a ship from Taiwan.
During this time all the newsgroup talk is about the quality of the kits,
how I can do this at no profit, how there is no way I can put Tower out of
the heli kit business , etc. Nothing about the possibility of this being a
scam.
At this point there is still no web page for my business, no toll free
number to call, nothing.
Finally another post shows up stating that I am now taking orders for the
helicopter, car and airplane kits. Lets say I only get a hundred orders
placed. That is just short of $35,000 in the pocket, and I am gone, never
to be heard from again.
Not a bad pay day for a grand total of about 2 hours of work posting and
answering posts.

A quick search of the Google archives reveal these choice quotes from
our dear friend James (james@agile.net):
"Many people call you homophobic because you hate gay people. This is
a compliment. God mandated in the Torah that they be stoned. Ask any
Jew."
"Oh, Susan how I love Jewish women. The way they suck and will make us
Arab
men feel so good."
"Muslims do not support death. Peace is the way of the righteous..."
"Why is this anti-semetic? Was she stupid? Was she a jew? Was she a
bitch? If
you answered yes to all three questions, then the umpire was right by
calling her a stupid jew bitch..."
"Heller Information Services just released a survey indicating that
69% of
all Jewish women prefer black men as their sexual partner. 32% of all
Jewish
women indicated their second choice was Indian men.
The study also found that 88% of all Indian women have had dreams
about
having sex with black men but are afraid to act on their feelings due
to
societal pressure."
I ask you this: is this the kind of person you would like to do
business with?
