Yesterday I was approached for a project with UAV. I need to be able to fly from video screen many mils away(for now let's just say 5). Also I need to be able to have excellent resolution video/photography maybe hi-def possibly with IR capability. I know this is possible but as it is completly out of my league, I need help. Where do I go? What's it going to cost?
I remember someone here on rcg saying he had many years experience building composite UAVs for the military or something like that. Whoever you are, or anybody who knows anything about what I need, I'm reaching out to you now. I must strike while the iron is hot. Or that's what I'm being told by those Who approached me.
Donnie.

Hi,
I am not a UAV guy, but frankly speaking FPV piloting needs a lot of experience. I strongly remember JetPilot as very experienced UAV/FPV pilot. Contact him for further details.

Sound to me like someone is considering a UAV outback challenge.

I am a UAV guy and I will tell you that there is a lot or risk flying something a long distance away. I hope you have the funding and time to back up your project...and lawyers.
distance=increased cost=increased risk.

You need a vehicle that has an autopilot in it that allows manual control input by the pilot in command, otherwise it keeps itself level and corrects for direction changes caused by atmospheric conditions. Almost all the makers on the market have these capabilities. For video, you need the higher end stuff like L or C band, HiDef is a bit more problematic as it requires higher bandwidths, but can be done. If possible, you could use a lower video rate to fly/confirm position and record HiDef on board for retrieval. 5 miles is not very far so you shouldn't have too much trouble.

I looked up Jetpilot in the members search and found 2. Both with 0, that's right ZERO posts.

Not sure what your reference to outback is but a challenge, no doubt.

I must be honest.
I have a goal.
While I'm sure everything you say has some real reality basis to it,
your entire post contains nothing but negetivity and reasons that keep people from doing what I am trying to accomplish.
You say you are a UAV guy. So there is a chance you could help me.
For this I do not want to push you away, nor do I want to be a jerk.
As I said, I have a goal. If you're not onboard to help, Kindly stay off this thread.
Thanks,
Donnie

I'm glad to hear 5 miles wont be any trouble. I like the Idea of lower video rate to fly and record HiDef on board. Its starting to look like I may not even need HiDef video. Just quality video and pics. I don't think IR is necessary to get started. I understand what you are saying about autopilot capabilities.
Contacting these makers on the market as you say, and getting bottom line prices for what will fit my needs is very time consuming and not always possible.
I prefer to talk directly with company/manufacturer/individual.
Where can I learn more about L and C band?
What is fpv?
Thanks for helping,
Donnie

Fly-con take a look at the DIY drones site at www.DIYdrones.com
I think Chris did something with real time video or photos from a cell phone on the geocrawler 2 ?
Maybe not real time, but that might solve your long distance problems simply and affordably at least maybe for proof of concept. Its been a while since I read it so maybe I am wrong but it will sure give you some ideas.
That web site is a great way to start, very well done and very inspirational.
If Chris and those kids can build a Lego Based drone then you can do any thing.
Also Fly-con its Jettpilot, double T's.
Here is a link to his post about his way cool FPV van/command station (http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?t=847249&highlight=van) with pictures of the whole set up, him, and his very attractive CO-Pilot :D
Also read through the FPV section (http://www.rcgroups.com/video-piloting-fpv-rpv-469/) it will help with your video questions and the guys there are really helpful.
Pretend your from another country so the "Got Guildlines" guys don't pick on you ;)
Just kidding...
There are lots of reasons to be careful most importantly danger to other people but its your money if you have dealt effectively with the danger to others and others property like flying out were I live with hundreds of miles of nothing but desert, try/fly away, thats what I am planning and expecting to fly hundreds of dollars worth of equipment into the ground several times at first :)
Oh also for links to UAV equipment use the UAV links post at the top of the page :)
