Hi guys, got my first RC boat, now I just need a starter to get the thing started. The person I bought the boat from told me to get a high torque starter. Any recommendations as far as 12 volt or 24 volt, etc??? the boat is equipped with a K&B .82 inboard.
Maybe somebody has or knows of a used starter that would fit the bill, Thanks!

Most 'starters' are pull start.

External motorized ones can be bought or made but generally require one-way bearings, etc. The engine has to be made for or adapted to external starters. They can be kind of clumsy on boats. Abandonable belts aren't unusual on a boat.

Internal (on board) starters are usually small motors with small pinions driving a large spur gear on the motor which is either on a one-way bearing or turns the motor into a generator (pulling power from the motor). There have been some clever ideas in the onboard starter area. They can be home-built or some manufacturers have kits for them. Some manufacturers have them on board out of the box. In boats, they can get your boat home if it dies or runs out of gas.

Take a look at the Hobbico Torqmaster Starter (http://www.hobbico.com/fieldequip/hcap3200.html), you'll need a 12V SLA battery to power the starter. You might also consider the Hobbico Power Core (http://www.hobbico.com/fieldequip/hcap0901.html) power pack to provide the 12V power.

The business end of the starter has a groove in it to grip the starter belt to crank the engine over.
