OLY III & Sundays

I ordered a new high start from Hobby-Lobby a while back and put it together today to launch my modified OLY III (full house, flying stab). The high start is the Yellow one, you know the one, 100' [EIGHT POUNDS!] I only used 50' with 200' line.[limited flying field] I could only manage to stretch it about 18 paces, not much different than stretching a garden hose! I'm thinking, as I have it stretched out, gritting my teeth, loosing my grip on my beloved sailplane and developing a hernia, I think I should have ordered the orange one instead. I heard some kind of unfamiliar sound as I was about to launch..... I couldn't hold out another second.... I let go into about an eight to ten mph headwind not expecting to launch to the moon with so little stretch but w/the hell... My expectations where met, then EXCEEDED!!! :eek: That little noise I heard, suddenly became very interesting, seems that all that tension had pulled my adjustable tow hook all the way forward. :censored: By the time all this information had registered my sailplane was two counties upwind doing mach 9. After I got it turned around and headed back to the county I lived in and got my heart rate back down to a comfortable 110 bpm, the walk back to my house for a screwdriver was a welcome break. OK, towhook adjusted, let's try this again. Stretched now 20 paces thank's to my new footwear, golf cleats!! :cool: I let my beloved III loose once again. Unbelieveable :D :D :D Straight up the garden hose, errr I mean high start it goes. Perfect timing.... right into a Montana hat sucking thermal!!! Three rather large circles and suddenly 134 1/2"s is pretty darn small. ;) As I'm struggleing to keep my plane in sight I notice a very small black dot, then I recognize what it is... my arch enemy in flight, my friend, my competion that I vow one day to out thermal.... GOLDEN EAGLE. Damn... He's above me again! After about a 30 min flight I bring it in for a landing and as I'm walking back to the house I hear him cry out from far above.... and I wonder.... What's the next color above YELLOW? :confused: :p :D

LOL, The next larger size comes with solid rocket boosters and retro thrusters instead of spoilers.

Hey brave story there, makes me want to steal some time to finish the wings on my Oly III build. Sounds like you found one of those sometimes elusive can't-go-wrong thermals. Nice stuff.

Fantastic, and congrats on the flight.
I have an Oly III coming, and after reading some of the threads here I am going full house with mine also. Did you build yours "Stock" except for the full house? By that I mean did you change the dihedral any?
I assume that it performed as you were wanting.

I did put a full flying stab, changed the wing tips, cap stripped the ribs, and added carbon to the spar.I also rounded out the fuse and glassed it. I did drop the dihedral somewhat. This is my second season w/ my III and I couldn't be any happier with the way it performs. I posted a pic of it in the other Oly III thread if you're interested.
