Hey Guys.
Can any of you motor gurus tell me if my Plettenberg Terminator will run on 60 volts? I have the Kontronic Power Jazz ESC coming for it and that control will run up to 15S. But, info on my motor is scarce. I have never found anyone who has run this motor on anything higher than 48 volts.
Any thoughts (judging by the specs)?

Hello Heli Mod Man.
That motor on 15 s would only see 52-53 volts under load.
It would likely work well. Cooling in a heli app, may be another thing.

The heli motor (which I have) has an on board fan. So, I am good there.
I am running 10,000 MAH cells. So, voltage sag is minimal. My guess is I would only see about 4 volts sag under most use. On 12S, I only see 3 volt sag max.

geez, hi matt. I think you will be ok as long as you are not going full out all the time. LOL how fast do you want to go? I would think 40mph is fast enough :D it is case at too high an rpm, your temp will go up signficantly. so, I am assuming partial power for your application most of the time, so you should be ok.
plus, you will be only at 3-4k watt. right? unless you are going up fast. :)

I can run it full throttle pretty much indefinately at 40mph (this is in an E-bike for those who are wondering). It doesn't run too hot. I just do not want to risk $1,400 of motor and ESC (well, $1,000 motor) if it will be too much voltage. I have had issues in the past running overvoltage on various motors. So, I figured I would ask.

mostly, if you are within the bearing rpm spec and keep the temp reasonable, you should be fine. that is what kills, not overvoltage perse (over voltage will cause these two things to happen though) :)

I bookmarked that bike project page, I've been wanting to do the same thing (not a recumbant) for a while. Great work and answers several of the questions I had about practical issues.

15s could mean to high rpm for the 20pole motor design, for example the actro 60 doas not like rpms over 6000, for more rpm they have a special version with diffrent bearings/design and some changes in the stator wind, so it can run efficient up to and over 10,000.
My recomendation would be to contact Plettenberg directly and ask.
