Just being nosy, what do you guys use to carry your boats from your house to the lakeside, minivan, suv, station wagon? and how many boats can you get in it in one trip?
keith S
Jul 13, 2008, 12:36 PM
Arms, to truck, to arms into the water. I can get about 10 boats in depending on how they are arranged/stacked ( travel boxes ) and what size boats I am hauling. Usally I take only 2-3 boats at a time with me since there is all the gear ( table, canopy, support box) chair, and lunch!

Ford Escape (you'd know it as the Maverick in Europe).
How many boats? Depends on how big/tall, and whether I bring my little red wagon... but with rear seat cushions removed, seat backs folded down, and no riders, it has quite the capaciy for a small vehicle.
Wish I had some pix of my old Focus 3-door loaded to the gunwales!

Southampton
Elmshorn

AvidJeeper, New Mustang? The rear seats fold down? I've had the pleasure of renting those a few times- Ford really captured the original well!
Subaru moves my boats! :) The requirement was to be able to carry a fully rigged US1M sailboat and it does that, no problem... I have not run out of space on any boating trips yet...

01 Hyundai Sonata.. nirvana just fits in the front passenger foot well on it's stand (no sails) .. Springer tug on the passenger seat, nirvana's sails in carbboard protector behind front seats ... the lil 'toy' flying sub sits on the passenger seat with the springer. Proboat PT on back seat beside car seat.
I have been considering building a rack for the trunk .. but that's where all the large accesories are going (crane barge, towables, scale docking etc).. the boats in the cabin with me don't shift around
if I happen to take the 64 F100 instead.. I get 2 maybe 3 boats in the front seat with me... the bed has no non slip or cover so the boats stay in the cab.
the F100 is up for sale though (need little more for house Downpayment :( ) but after house is ours, wifey gets the Hyundai .. and I'm going to go get a brand new pick me up truck... I'm thinking a 4x2 Toyota Tacoma.. I WANT an Xrunner .. but I think just a base access cab and modify to my liking
but yeah all my current stuff relatively easily fits in the Sonata :D

Just unloaded 5 models, and associated gear, from the back of my wife's 2007 Tahoe a half hour ago. I didn't think to take a picture of the boats in the car. We use the Tahoe for the longer road trips because it rides better and has XM radio. Normally we take my 2007 HHR Panel truck for trips to our usual lake.

Me? Usually my Cavalier Coupe, with 60/40 fold-down rear seats. For a small car, it can haul a lot of stuff, and I've carried my entire Toledo hobby show booth display in it more than a few times. :)
But it's a lot easier using my wife's '07 Toyota Rav-4---. :D

I have a mini van with the center seat removed. on the other hand I need that space to enter and exit in my wheel chair. I can carry a footy and a fast mover in a crate in the back seat, my Laser is in it's carry bag and I think I can stuff it behind the rear seat or maybe lay it on the rear seat and drop the others in the front seat. If I have a rider, I can take LOTS of boats as long as I can get into the van first, then they can bury the rear area and unload before I get out.
If I was not in my WC, I would be in a Scion, and the rear seat is out of that too, that I could get my tug, fast mover, footy and the laser as well.

In March I traded in my 02 Blazer for a new HHR. A little less room but not bad. It will get a real test the end of the month hauling a 24" and a 36" tug, 16 1/2" x 36" barge, tool box, cameras, and the club's old pool liner (3x3x1 box 120lbs) to Kohler for our event there. If it all won't fit I will have to use my S-10 SS.

By the way, as an employee, I can get "X" plan pricing for friends & neighbors... usually around another grand off on mid-priced Ford/Lincoln/Mercury vehicles, over and above any other incentives... new cars only, purchased and lease. It involves getting some info from you and generating a "PIN".
If anyone is SERIOUSLY shopping, let me know offline (PM me)... I only get 4 of these a year, but have 3 left right now. And I reserve the right to cancel the PIN if unused...

I too was a dedicated Ford guy - use them for work, 79 Stepside (still in yard!), Ford Chateau, bunch of 150's to the last 2005 one. Up for lease return in August, couldn't get as good a deal this time - switched to a Dodge with the Hemi short box. Only thing is Ford made the rear seating area larger and shortened the box. Noticed when I went to load my boat the first time. Liked the Ford on the road though.

a pasting tabkle, what you lay wallpaper on whilst you glue the back of it prior to pasting it to a wall.
some pics.
the rest can be found on the modelboatmayhem site, as it was the wicksteed III event that I was at.
the sleeping bag, tent was UNDER the folded seats along with the beer, stove, kettle and pans, bedding was in the passenger foot well, the pasting table was behind the back seats against the tailgate.
will I load that much again, probably not! however the gas stove and kettle remain in the van. one of the yachts did not come back with me after I sold it, the one that went had been sitting on a shelf for 2 years and only got her hull wet that weekend

the new mustang looks like an older mustang, but more chunky. this retro design I think has worked. :)
also as for the car makers, Ford owns well FORD, so to cost cut for them is easy they integrate US Asian and European models, that is why the US Focus is virtually identical to the European Focus, same for the Fiesta, changes made only to accommodate local regulations regarding lights and fenders.
GM owns Vauxhall/Opel, Dodge, Chrysler and a host of others, too much to slim down.

My boat hauler is my 2004 Chevy Avalanche Z71. I have made some custom mods to my truck and I now call it a Cascade Edition. Fits most all of my boats in the back nicely, and keeps them covered. My 1/8 scale Miss Elam tho takes up a huge amount of space and does not allow for many more passengers.

that is a Classic Hydro's Vintage Shovelnose availible from off shore electrics(kit) it will do about 40 mph with a proboat 1500kv bl motor(blackjack) on 4s lipos and an x640 prop. it is a challenge getting the packs in/out...it is a fairly sturdy boat none the less. the down side is the hardware installation instructions(as in there aren't any). I think though that I could probably walk you through that :). hth
