I've been using the Traxxas trucks for years, love them. I'd really like to take a turn with a boat. I can't decide for my first one out if it should be an electric or a nitro. They all look great to me but I can't have one of each.

I vote electric.
Cleaner, easier to run and quieter.... and probably faster by the way. You need to think about this when you look for (or have) a pool to run in / at.

Do you currently run Elec or Nitro trucks?

If you decide on a nitro boat you may want to consider how you are going to recover it when it runs out of fuel or if you swamp it. You WILL swamp it or run out of fuel so you need a way to SAFELY recover it. DO NOT SWIM AFTER A BOAT!! there have been too many threads here and on other R/C boating boards mentioning the passing of someone that swam after a stranded R/C boat. Most of those people knew how to swim and swim very well but they got stuck in weeds or something else that happened unexpectedly that does not happen in a pool.

I am with Toes on the electric boat. They are faster quieter and less likely to get stranded (yes they can still get stuck but not as often).

The Traxxas Nitro Vee (http://www.traxxas.com/products/marine/nvee/trx_nvee.htm) does about 25 mph out of the box. The Traxxas Villian EX (http://www.traxxas.com/products/marine/villain_ex/trx_villain_ex_over.htm) does about 30 mph out of the box. The hulls are exactly the same - only difference is the Nitro Vee has a single outdrive while the Villian has two outdrives. The Nitro Vee also has two electric motors that go along for the ride, helping to account for the lower speed. The first Nitro Vee motor is the starter motor, the second one is the Traxxas Return-to-Shore (RTS) motor. The RTS motor gets the boat back to shore after you kill the nitro engine.

DO NOT use Traxxas Top Fuel in their nitro boats - it says so in their instruction manual. The Traxxas Top Fuel doesn't have enough oil to porperly cool the engine.

The Traxxas Blast has a forward only speed control.
