Our club , EDSF, hosted the SC2 event for June at the ISS site in Riverside California. It was quite a test of challenging conditions(100 degrees+) and inconsistent lift, but in the end,as usual, fun was had by all.

This was our first opportunity to run the Brandon 2048 winch and Retriever 2000 combo in a competitive environment. It was one of the three winches we set up to handle the 27 competitiors in the contest. We had a line tangle between the spool and bearing plate on the second launch because the pilot stayed on the power long after his plane came off. Once that tangle was clear, the winch performed great throughout the day. We had planes from Gentle Ladies to Sharons and Shadows launching and everyone who used the winch liked it. For many pilots it was the winch of choice for the four round event.

We did have a couple of line breaks on the retriever, but otherwise the retriever worked very well as well. Jim had designed the line guide hub to be on an arm that folds out of the way during the launch, then you fold it into the retrieve position to begin the retrieve . I didn't know that we were supposed to do this until a loose loop came off the retriever and caught the top of the guide hub axle bolt during the launch, causing a pop-off. Once I realized that the folding arm wasn't just to make the unit more compact for storage, we had a great day with a lot of very easily controlled retrieves. I really like the fact that the retriever uses a 12 volt battery, so there's no need to to carry arround those very heavy 6 volt Trojans!

I want to thank Jim again for coming out with some really great launch equipment. Everytime I carry it from the front seat of my car to the flight line I'm amazed at how compact and light this winch is compared to the winches I've used in the past. It is truely a one winch for all airframes. You can check out the equipment at:

I want to second all of Clay's comments about the 2048 winch. I bought one about 6 weeks ago and it's everything that one could ask for in a winch (plenty of power, smooth and an excellent brake). The quality of the 2048 is outstanding. 1/0 welding cable for wiring, heavy duty solenoids, large led for checking solenoids condition, Anderson power pole connectors for battery hook-up and foot switch and a heavy duty on and off switch.

Now my only complaint. Shortly after I got mine Jim went to a motor with a chrome case. That has got to be worth 5 more horsepower or 20 ft/lbs of torque. :D Jim I want a chrome case on my motor. :D

Oh, only one other drawback. One of the other clubs here in Texas (ASF) wants to borrow it to use in their upcoming contest.

PS: when the 2048 is paired with a series 31 Optima or Odssey battery you have an unbeatable combo. We have put 40 to 50 launches on this setup with only minor difference (still tapping the switch but not as much) in the first launch and the last.

What Clay didn't mention was the fact that the 2048 was subjected to some really brutal conditions. When we set the 2048 up, we did not know that we had done so on top of a sprinkler head. The automated watering system turned on just before the contest started, and the 2048 received a good drenching before someone could place an upside-down trash can over the sprinkler head.

The winch performed fine despite the hosing. The moldie drivers stood on the pedal all day, while the AVA and RES woodie guys modulated the pedal, and to a pilot, anyone who used the 2048 was impressed with its ability to be as mild or wild as the pilot wanted it to be.

From a good dousing to led feet, the 2048 took some punishing treatment and still managed to work like a top.
