The Coast Guard is replacing the 41 foot boats with a new 45 foot Response Boat - Medium. 45601 has been delivered to Station Little Creek VA in April. 45602 will go to Station Cape Disappointment WA in August. 45603 to Station Key West FL in September, and Station Milwaukee, WI in October. 41433 has been a mainstay in Milwaukee as long as I can remember. It will be interesting seeing this new boat. The new boat will be home grown, it is being built at Marinette Marine.

When will a kit and RTR be available?

The photos and diagrams on the site are ALMOST enough to build a model from.
Local builder eh? Maybe you could talk to them about some "modeler's drawings"...

That is one nice boat. The Coast Guard web site provides some great pics. Looks like another boat that would look good done in litho plate.

I ran across an article in a magazine (pre 911) discussing the budget problems the USCG was faced with while trying to update their fleet. I huge contrast to their current fleet of zippy boats.

Is this replacing the "new" fleet they built, that is poorly designed and breaking up under stressful conditions? Havn't kept up with that fiasco.

The 45' RB-M is replacing the 41' Utility boat which is getting old. The issue you are thinking of was with the lengthening of the 110' cutters which developed structural problems from the stretch.

The 110' ISLAND class was a bit of a compromise for the USCG. The CG Yard had already started mocking up a 120' WPB (patrol boat), which the CG operators and engineers wanted. But, political backing caused that plan to be scrapped for the 110' built under license at a yard on the Gulf coast. The 110' was designed with a 15-20 year lifespan in mind. The hull problems were identified after the first few boats (in the A sub-class) were originally delivered in the mid 1980's.

Nice boat, sure makes one long for the days when...
They are slowly phasing out the CG of my days. Glad to see them entering the 21st century at last.
I just hope that they stay true to their original missions.

We carried M-60s mounted to the rails, 45ss then 9s, and 12g shotguns. The main mission was SAR.
Really no place to mount the cruise missiles or mini guns.

Hello all,
Has anyone managed to source any drawings of the RB-M yet?
I'm getting the KaMeWa jet drives sorted at the moment for a 1/12 scale version and I've got the basic plan and elevation, but the hull is a bit more complex than the FRB I finished (and which is now in LA).
Although the photos on the uscg sites are great (and a LOT better than we'd ever get in the UK), I'd like to get the hull a bit more accurate this time.
Any help would be much appreciated.

A great way to scramble your brains. Hope the crew is belted in.
Looks like the Ship canal in Seattle WA. Oh wait, was it built by Kvichak? It is Seattle. Looks likr Western Towboat in the background. Huh....

Welcome to RC Groups Tony, As he said above the FRB is part of the Hansen Dam Fleet in Los Angeles. Can be seen here.

And of course when you(Tony) begin this build you will need to post a build thread with lots of pics here on RC Groups. We were all impressed with your litho plate work.

Hi Manny,
Thanks for the comments. My face is VERY red now!
I've printed your 'bonfire' for my office and as far as I remember there's a photo of a FRB, surrounded by smoke, on the USCG site!
Just in case, the windows are made using 7Up bottle plastic, cooked in the oven between 2 brass plates. 160 degrees for about 20 mins should sort out a replacement! Watch out that the plastic shrinks and thickens in the process.
I've started taking dimensions for the RB-M off the various photos etc and it 'should' be straightforward BUT there's always the element of doubt. I'm slightly concerned about the power since the scale weight is about 20lbs, which seems a lot for 2 scale jet-drives.
Whatever I find in the way of drawings, I'll post on here.
Best of Luck
Tony

Tony,
No harm done to the boat it self. Just a fried esc. I am sure everyone here would love to see your build techniques. Start a build thread in the The Scale Boats section.

I've spent the day going over the photos etc. and ironed out in my own mind how it could be built but one question comes up.
What colour is the boat?
From the shots it could be either light grey paint or brushed aluminium, so has anyone seen one in the flesh and, if so, what is the answer?
I've assumed that it's aluminium, in which case the litho plate comes out of it's box but I'm not so sure.
Thanks in anticipation
Tony

Current gossip around Marinette/Menomonee is the project may be on hold. Rumor has it that Congress is sitting on the funding for the 45' RB-M. I did a search on the web for more info and didn't find anything to confirm or refute the rumor.

I've almost got to the end of the project, so here are a couple of pics.
Launch should be next week when the jet drives may just blow apart but.........
Finish is not brilliant at this stage but it's not too bad for a test bed.
