I found this website with some updated information on the removal of the New Carissa on the Oregon Coast. Looks like thay are using a couple jack up crane barges

Oh boy, memories!!!!! I have a T-shirt I got in Newport during the New Carrisa event which has a picture screened on the front of the shirt of the ship pre-grounding/breakup. Words on the front say "The New Carissa Tour 1999", next line "Oregon". Then there's a map of the Oregon coast with all the towns labeled and Waldport and Coos Bay highlighted; alongside it the words, "Floating to a Coastal Town Near You!"
What a hoot!

Yeah...that ship went through a heck of a lot including being blown ashore, stormed by Navy SEALS, napalmed, torpedoed, and fired on by 5" guns. My only disappointment was that it broke in half after the naplam strike.
Check out You Tube for the Oregon State Highway Departments solution to getting rid of a dead whale that washed ashore. Must have been during the late 60's or early 70's. They packed a bunch of TNT under it and blasted away, thinking the carcass would disintegrate. Instead, chunks of rotting blubber landed everywhere including smashing up a car parked nearby.
It's worth the trouble to try and find the video. It's a good chuckle. :D
