Ok, the switchback sport is my first aileron plane and I am using it as a trainer, I couldn't be any happier with my choice of plane, it fly’s great. After practicing doing a roll with FMS I got up the nerve to try it with the real deal today. I had the speed up, pointed the nose a little up and gave full right stick. She rolled nice but seemed to drop a lot in altitude. At the very end of the roll I found my self having to give up elevator and right stick to level off.

I adjusted the throws from 80% up to 110% with same results.

Should I be giving a lot of up and turn at the same time to try to keep it level????

could it be setup issue????

Any advice would be appreciated..

Kenny..:)

As it goes inverted, add some down elevator to keep the nose up. After you master that, start applying top rudder during the knife edge portions to make the roll perfectly axial.

Thanks for the quick reply. Surprizingly this part of the forum doesnt seem to get a lot of activity. I'll try a little down elevator when going inverted in the roll.

"start applying top rudder during the knife edge portions "

whats top rudder?? Does that meen, if going into the roll right to give some left rudder???

Pretty much. Doing a right roll, you would start adding left rudder until the wings are 90 degrees to the right, then slowly take out the rudder as the plane goes inverted. As the plane starts the second half of the roll, start adding right rudder until 3/4 of the roll is completed, then slowly take out the right rudder until the plane is upright. It takes a lot of practice to make perfectly coordinated rolls.

WOW:) :D :D

Now that is exactly the type of description I needed.

Now it's time to get busy practicing.

THANKS!!!!!!! FlyFalcons

Posting this thread was a good time stamp. Its been around five months since I posted this and I can remember the fear I first had . Hopefully this video link will work. It's hard to find a free server to post things on.

Try www.rcsites.net for your own 15mb site.

Thanks flyfalcons. I changed the link above to my netfirms account. When I saw that site I remembered I signed up there a long time ago. So I searched my old saved emails and got my name and logon info.. For a few bucks more at netfirms I get alot more space and features (not that I plan on using any of them) but they are there.. Since I posted this a few months back, I purchased an eclipse radio and programed a switch to do axactly what you advised with the rudder. Your post really helped take the fear out of trying the roll..

Now I need more. I have printed out threads describing how to do particular manuvers and practice all the time... I've still got a long way to go though..

Thanks again

Nice video! Man, what motor do you have in that? That looks like it has pretty good vertical performance(or is that just the wind sucking it up? :D ). Im looking to buy a SB pretty soon. Have you just flown the sport or the 3D wing also?

Thanks SPEED, I have an astro 010 14T from aeromicro in the b gearbox with E-tec 1200s The vertical performance is Exellent :D
This is by far my funnest plane. I've never tried the switchback with the 3d wing but the sport fly's wonderful too. The Dandy sport that Doug sells seems like a great flyer as well. Drivie,Turbo Joe and myself just had a great day of flying Sunday and they each had there switchbacks and dandy sports.

If you didn't see the video on my hocky little site, here it is.

No cludder at all LOL.. As you can see it never got much activity.
(with exception to the kindness of flyfalcons help) over these months.

I'll do the best I can here. The E-tecs are 3s1p and the servos are the gws pico purchased from Doug. I pretty much fly with a 10x8 gws prop and aPhoenix 10 speed control supplied with the motor from aeromicro. The covering is econocoat on the sides and ultracoat light on the wings. It just weighed in at 13.5 auw. I'm sure I could have built it a hair lighter but I wanted a fairly strong wing after breaking the first one. Oh and a berg5 receiver from Doug too. I was waiting for Doug to supply the Razor motors before buying the dandy sport and it seemed like he was never going to get them in, so I built my own version out of boredum.

Wow, thanks for the info. I guess you could say this thread doesnt get much 'action'. While were on the subject: whats the benefits of the berg5 Rx? Ive heard some stuff about it but Im just curious why you choose it I guess.

I just figured out that the plane in the first video is your scratch built. How does it fly, performance wise, compared to the original SB Sport? Im just trying to decide if I want to jump into the 3D wing or stick with the Sport. Im flying a GWS P-51 right now, and I would say its a pretty challenging plane to fly. I wont have the SB built until after Ive really got a handle on the mustang. Do you have any thoughts for me?

Well I've never tried the p51, but the switchback sport was a gentle little lady. The dandy sport I hear is even gentler. As far as how the scratchbuilt flies compared to the sbs, lets just say it’s my grab n go plane. The switchback is now motorless and I may remove the gear for the Hangover. I bought the berg receiver from Doug just because I needed another one and there was no real reason or educated desire for it. I will say this though, I run channel 54 on both a jr receiver and the berg5. & at one field in frequent I get lots of glitching with the jr and the berg is rock solid.. I have seen the berg4 and it has a neat feature that registers how many glitches it receives (as I’m told). Other than that I can’t say much more… Good luck with the Switchback. You’ll love it. My advice for the 3d/sport is get both. Eventually your going to want it anyway….
