so ... I need some help with the above subject ... I can build near anything from metal ... but i'd like to expand my horizons cause balsa and styrene and such will give much better details and such (not to mention WAY less weight ;) )

so ... I'm looking for names and such for 5 min epoxy... epoxy based resin(for Fiberglass, and soaking balsa and cardboard ;) ) ... I think the other is zapagap? for filling some small and some larger (like 1/4 inch tops) gaps in structures and stuff

is there anything else anyone can think of?.. suggest of the above list? (names would help ! )

no suggestions for specific names/brands? ... I picked up some 5min epoxy that can't even stick to itself X(

I've done my first balsa wet down and bend (carefully break?) and I need to know an epoxy based resin to seal/harden etc it... and a proper adhesive to assemble this and other things

help?.. beyond plastic modeling basic glue.. I'm lost :(

The cheap & nasty 5 min epoxy is usually best used as a sealant around prop shafts rather than as an actual stress bearing joint. LHS epoxy works much better, the longer the settin time, usually, the better. Contact adhesive works well, but for balsa to balsa, the finest glue is balsa cement. The traditional ways of sealing using thinned dope became traditional because they worked. More modern solutions such as wet rot stabilisers are reported to work well, as is thinned paint

I use J B Weld Adhesive (http://www.jbweld.net/products/jbweld.php) for all my critical joints that require strength and waterproofing. Used the same as epoxy without the downsides.

I've been using this on all my boats for over 35 years and have yet to have a joint fail or leak...period.

Gougeon Brothers, Inc. Bay City, MI (USA) makes epoxies sold through West Marine, and have published a number of books on the use of their products. I highly recommend, Wooden Boat Restoration & Repair, catalog number 002-970, for about $4. USD. (78 pages)

The right of the picture displays a high quality epoxy and a filler, Micro Balloons, available from your local hobby shop.

Hope this helps.

I've used JB products for years but never thought about using in on models, I keep a tube of kwik weld at home and in my cars, cures in 4 min. so if you don't have time to wait it works great. Also used to keep tubes of their marine weld on my sailboat years ago, never had to use it but had it just in case.

Thanks PondProwler for the tip.
