View Full Version : JR and Futaba compatible?

While wandering aimlessly through a somewhat disappointing hobby shop
today I noticed a JR XR2 radio for $100. It sounds just about perfect
for me. AM so the receivers are cheaper, all the EPA and DR and ATV
and stuff that I need, and 2 car memories. What I don't know, however,
is if the JR transmitter with talk to a Futaba receiver. I know that
FM aircraft systems won't, but I've heard that AM systems will. Anyone
know for sure?

I have the JR XR2 in one of my R/C boats. It's a great radio.
I run Futaba radios in all of my R/C cars.
I tested the radios for compatibility, and found that, yes.....
The JR transmtter will work fine with a Futaba receiver, and the crystals are
interchangeable.
As long as you have the proper freq. crystals in the TX & RX, you're golden.
You will have no regrets going with the JR, it is well-balanced in the hand,
very adjustable, and is PCM to boot.
Hope that helps, good luck.

usually not a problem with AM sets, they tend to talk to each other OK, FM
sometimes leads to problems although I have my KO transmitter talking to my
KO, hitec, and Futaba receivers.

Unfortunately I couldn't check the news before I left this morning,
but I decided to wimp out and pick up a Futaba 2PCKA. Stripped the
case of the receiver that came with it, sealed it up in some heat
shrink, and stuck it in the Micro RS4, then spent about 2 minutes
setting up the PCKA for the 10LSS. Works perfectly. I toned down the
steering and now it has no understeer at speed (added rear spring
preload, too) and only spins out from a start when I'm not paying
attention (as in, it's still a very light RWD pan car ;) I suppose I
really should have bought the XR2 so I could use it with my <insert
name of new car here> when I get it, but then car radios are cheap,
unlike the Super 8 I fly with ;)

I've had problems with 72 mhz. FM stuff before. Picked up a GWS
receiver, but got the wrong one. Wouldn't even twitch the servos. But
I'd read that AM was a totally different story. Thanks for confirming
it.

Yeah usually no problems with switching receivers, but as a precautionary
measure I would recommend using the same Tx/Rx crystal manufacturers in the
radio and receiver. I've had friends experience some extra glitching and
interference due to swapping crystal brands... I guess their frequencies are
ever so slightly different.
