Hey, how long's it been since we a had a weather thread? Oh right, like yesterday...

Anyway, 2nd round of thunder boomers coming over right now here in Motown... been on my generator for the last 28 hours, trees down all around (I'm ok)... enough on the genset to run the fridge, the sump pump, and the all important PC!

I've been watching the same storm since last night. It's almost like there is an invisible bubble over St. Louis. The storms seem to disappear as they get close and re-appear on the other side.

green-boat gets them before us, and patmat gets them after us. In two days we had 5.8" in West Allis. Brookfield just to the west of us got about 9". Downtown Waukesha is floating. Lake Delton (man made) up by Wisconsin Dells broke through a road, bypassing the dam, and emptied into the Wisconsin River. Some nice, expensive homes lost but no reported injuries.

I'm afraid to know how high our pond is. We may be able to launch from the street.

We too have had ALOT of rain and the 2 main rivers around here are FULL and the Dam is about to go over the safety spillway which makes it close to 89 feet which may or maynot top the 1993 flood when we lost water supply for 12 days. Computer showed the Wisc. houses flush down stream at Lake Delton. The tornado arena has shown its ugly head several times and nothing to sneeze at. Now that reminds of the song Wipe Out!

Not much point in getting used to the weather around here, it changes too often. I'm just getting used to sweat being a normal thing and what happens? 65 degrees, windy, and raining. Not sure if I'm glad I can turn the AC off, or complain cuz I'm freezing! Give it another month, I'll be wishing for that 65 degree stuff again. Oh well, whatever...
- 'Doc

PS - Got some very nice pictures of a tornado going over! Nice sunny day, not all that windy, but there's this tail dragging cloud coming across town. (No, the pictures were not taken by me, I swipped'em. Think I'm crazy enough to stand out there and take pictures? Well, yeah, but I can't work the @#$ cell phone camera!)

Yuck, Detroit Edison tells me maybe power will be back by midnight Wednesday... over 72 hours on the generator, about the same as with the Great Northeast Blackout of 2003... and just like then, we're dealing with rain/lightning/heat and much mugginess...

Pat, I didn't know that the Detroit area had such prolonged power outages.

Where I am, our power comes from an old coal-fired power station along the Niagara River, and our lights stayed on even during the great blackout. ;)

I do know that we get pretty much the same weather pattern, about eight hours after you do, though. :p

The last two days have been hot and humid, punctuated by showers and a few thunderstorms. :)

But nothing really bad, and NO outages---. :D

We got some wild weather overnight too, but nothing like you! Lightning, wind, and rain.

When the boy and I went for our hill run this morning (6:30AM), we got half way up the hill the first time, and all heck broke loose. Dark sky, wild lightning, and a torrential downpour. We finished one cycle and high-tailed it home. Before we had dried off the sun was out...

Pat, I was out in Lake Erie when we got over run by that storm. It chased us right into the Harbour. The boat was crashing through 5 foot walls of water at 30 MPH. I really know for SURE that this 1:1 Chris of mine will take REALLY large water.
In all the excitement to " get the he** going", I forgot about the Vidcam. When I looked to the West, it looked like a dark purple curtain had been dropped on a grey rug.

The flood control dam here is at 888.39 after baffles were put into place to raise the lake level another 6'. This will give the city time to sandbag the city of 400,00 along the east wall. Now in 1993, the record level was 892' and created problems for all. They say alot more water is coming downstream and to top it all the other big river joins in downtown and it is super bank full. Just in, they are closing all bridges across the river but won't isolate the downtown from the northwest. Interstates north and south will be in trouble tonight. 10:50 pm here and the water went over the emergency spillway and with the regular spillway and emergency spillway will release 21,00 cf per second of water.

I will say a prayer for everyone. Y'all stay high and dry! ;)

Wet and windy last night with a few booms in between. And cold. It was snowing in the mountain passes last night and this morning. Snow plows had to be called out and chains required. Coldest 1st week of June here since 1897!! ( no that is not a type-o). Norm for temps is in the 60-70 degre range. On a good day it gets to 55 lately. :(

Here just south of St. Louis we got just enough to wet the pavement and leave dry spots under the trees. Today it was in the upper 80's with no humidity and clear blue sky's. :D

I live 3 hours from Detroit in Ontario, and the only thing we experienced here was a ripple a couple nights ago, the lights flicked off and then back on and all was well again.

Your'e lucky then, Pimp. I was in a phone chat just a few hours ago, with a guy from Sterling Heights, MI, and he had no good news for the Detroit area. :(

High winds dropped some trees, and along with them, power lines. They have out-of-state companies helping to get the lights back on---. ;)

72 hours now straight on the generator... bad enough filling up my car, but when you see how small a 5 gallon jerry can is and you say "$20 for THAT?"
Takes about 2 of those a day to keep the genset going...

Our guys are dealing with THOUSANDS of these:

Pat,

I know how you feel. A couple of years ago we had a bad storm come thru here and knocked out our power for 5-6 days and no generator. There were parts of town that it took 2 weeks to get their power restored. You couldn't find a generator if you wanted one. Two months later the stores that ordered extra generators couldn't give them away, 5 and 6 KW generators for $199.

Now all that rain/water that is up north has to go somewhere. It's all got to come down the Mississippi right  http://waterdata.usgs.gov/nwis/uv?07010000

Here in Davenport, IA the NWS is forcasting a flood crest of 18.9' Sunday night, flood stage is 15' (1993 was 22.3').

It just so happens that my wife is a forcaster for the National Weather Service (NWS). There is talk at her office of a near record flood like 1993 if these weather patterns continue.

Anybody got plans for the Ark? We're looking at 2 more inches for tomorrow night. It figures, we usually have bad weather on meeting night.

A few years back our power was down after a bad storm. We used a inverter connected to the pickup and ran a extension cord through the window. Enough power to run a TV or a single computer. Not a cheap solution. Tim Taylor could appreciate a V8 generator though.

Power outages, tornados, flooding---.

Where they need rain, it's drought conditions, and where they don't need more, they're being washed away---. :p

People; they shut down I-80 from Quad cities to Des Moines, Iowa due to flood waters. The flood crests are going to be higher than 1993 record levels and also said cross country vehicles should avoid Iowa till things get better. The detour will be 110 miles total. Mother nature at work!

The Meramec river near me just keeps a cumin on up. It's mostly all back water because the Mississippi is up and still rising.

I drove past the Meramec last March a few minutes before they shut down the freeway due to floods- lotta sad people then, must be again.
Got my power back last night after 4 days, but my problems here were negligible compared to anyone with water knocking at the front door...

I turned on the computer this morning and the first thing to pop up was the news that Cedar Rapids, Iowa had flooded. With record gas prices and an iffy economy, this is the last thing these people needed---.

Hopefully, the government will help out, and in a better manner than they did with Hurricane Katrina---.

We had a rainstorm here about 2:00, which turned to dense, dime-sized hail that almost looked like snow.

I watched it for a while, then it stopped, so I went back downstairs to my shop, thinking it was over. ;)

Next thing, I heard loud hammering on the roof and siding, went back up, and the hail was back, bigger than ever---. :p

These hailstones were approaching the size of golf balls---!

(I went out afterward, retrieved a handful, and put them in the freezer to show my wife when she gets home, so I won't be accused of exaggerating---.) :D
