I'm in San Diego and just finished setting up our booth (#2339). I probably won't have time to do an extensive photo shoot, but might get some later in the week.

I'm there now. I'm giving the opening keynote at 8:00 am, talking about open source UAVs. Trying not to get arrested....:)

lol, let us know how it went. I take it this show is or is not open to the general public?

It is open to the general pulblic, but you need to be an AUVSI member. It is about $50 a year and includes a magazine subscription. The Shephard Group had a pretty good UAV magazine as well but is out of England and costs about $100 in the US. Finally, there is Janes which is something crazy like $1000 a year!

A lot of miscellaneous pictures I took today ... not in any particular order and by no means the full show. Sorry if you're on a slow-speed connection, these are high-res so you can zoom in.
Enjoy!

Really? Hmm...can I pay at the door? Any details? 50.00 isn't bad. I just want to geek out on all the latest technologies. Closest I get to that stuff is Discovery or Military Channel. Looks from the website to be only pre-registered attendees.
Dan, great photos. Thank you. Bummer living in San Diego and missing out on at least a walk through. I can't believe nothing on the local news about this. ... any Paparazzi Based UAV?

One of our grad students is out there, should have told him to take lots of pictures. And find me a job.

No, the whole left side of the registration area is for people who are signing up on the spot with a credit card. Get there now!

None that I saw. All the low-end ones I check in on were using Procerus or CloudCap autopilots. I think we (http://diydrones.com/profiles/blog/show?id=705844%3ABlogPost%3A38218)had the only open source boards there.

When I went to the one in Orlando, there were people paying at the door, but I think it was a little more then the AUVSI member price. I don't know what they are charging today in San Diego but I am certain whatever it is you won't be disappointed.

Being only 10 months after the last show seems to have reduced the amount of new stuff. There should also be flight demos.

what did the Air Force do to that poor SIG Rascal? There's a lot of electronics in there, wouldn't mind knowing what they had done.

It's the "show version" for demo's and things like AUVSI. Not quite flight worthy configuration.
This particular setup is essentially an airborne communications relay. The large board in the rear is a stock 802.11 wireless router. Think "reachforward" to nearby ground users. The large black box in the front is a sytem called JCAN (Joint Capability for Airborne Networking). It's essentially a intelligent router that understands a wide variety of communications links. Typically it"s used on much larger platforms to provide internet based connectivity over existing aircraft radios. (like HF,UHF,VHF,Inmarsat, etc) In this particular case it's only using a single Freewave 900mhz modem (middle top) to provide "reachback" I.E connectivity down to the ground at distances beyond what 802.11 would provide. The other stack of boards in the lower center is a PC-104 processor stack, running video compression software for the small white USB dongle behind it, and a gimbal cam on the front. There is also a webcam on the landing gear leg (Who says a Rascal cant carry 15lbs......) So basically all the traffic (video, webcam images via email, chat and email from ground users) comes in to the JCAN box and gets prioritized and routed. It actually looks better with more reachback comm, as the links get "banded" together to increase available bandwidth.
But again, this is more a demo payload. Should fly like this end of summer (without the big metal black box, just the board.
The Rascals typically have been carrying communications payloads to characterize a variety of comm links. Looking at how antenna characteristics, yaw, pitch, roll, terrain, distance, etc affect comm. With the end result of more accurate models of typical small UAS comm. And the sides dont get cut open in those either......

Well if you've got a bunch of your own 12,000' paved runways around the world, no problem! :-)
I had a little trouble getting airborne with 5 extra lbs using the stock wheels on cut, but relatively thick grass ... but with floatier wheels or paved surface, I think getting up to flying speed with a lot of extra weight would be much easier. I'd have to scale back my normal aerobatic routine a bit though with a 15 lb payload ... wouldn't want to fold up those big wings.

These videos from the 2008 AUVSI show were just released, they are from an interview that was done at my booth. There are 2 parts to each segment with a commercial in the middle:

When I watched these I noticed that I really talk from one side of my mouth because I have one deaf ear and it looks a little strange to me!

Great pictures BTW.
