Hey everyone, OK I am itching and itching to build something. Yea yea I know I have a few ships not finished.... Anyway to my question. I want to build a research vessel. I dont know how to build jigs for PoF hulls nor do I have a jig saw to cut the wood. That being said I am looking for fiberglass or plastic hull, and a high bow/ low aft type hull. I want to put twin korts and twin rudders. Something about 36-42 inches long and about 10-11 inches wide. I am hoping to make a working crane that will be able to drop a small DSRV into the water and recover it. (DSRV may be built R/C later). Also does anyone know of a free/inexpencive CAD program that can be used to draw up plans?
Thanks in advance everyone

massey, have you seen Nord Icelandia at all ;) Graupner do a small 3" long RC sub, (its a bit on the cheap side, I had one and its no longer working, not sure if the sub itself has packed in OR the tx has packed up and gone home)
when I did Nord Icelandia, I started with a cheap e-bay hull and worked off that, NO PLANS, NO INSTRUCTIONS, just an idea in my head.

PS a good starting point for what you need would be the Model Slipway AZIZ anchor handling tug. then build a new superstructure out of styrene, adjusting scale fittings as well to suit your needs.

Massey,
If you want to do a research vessel conversion (ala Calypso) you might think outside the box a little. I was thinking a subchaser hull or something similar.
A guy in our club bought a couple of old models and is cobbling up a research vessel from the two of them. It is a unlikely combination of a American Scout hull and a Billings Calypso.
I am attaching a couple of pictures of R/Vs from the Great Lakes water research Center here in Milwaukee.

deans marine makes a survey vessel that looks very much like the "EPA vessel Lake Guardian"
1/3 down the page, look for "Bulldog":

Hi Massey
Here are some pics of my on going Research Vessel, Meteor. The hull is Pof and was built for me by a friend as I couldn't or haven't the skills yet to read the plan. There is a Revell kit which I refer to when the plan is tricky.

Ghost your thread on your little ship is what started me looking for the plans and what not. Graupner has a kit of a bouy tender that caught my eye a few years ago, but I want build something that is ocean going and have a horseshoe crane on the stern. I am thinking about a hull that is mainly shaped like the Tito Neri only with a longer rear deck and not as wide. 36-42" long and only 10-11" wide unlike the Tito Neri that is 14 inches wide and around 35" long. I will post a pic of the kind of ship I am thinking about in another post I have to switch computers to get the images I found last night.

Here is a ship like what I want to build. The first pic's hull is the general shape I am looking for and the crane on the stern is too. I dont care for the cluttered deck and I dont care for that superstructure. The second and third pics have superstructures that are more to my liking and I will prolly design something using my favorite features of both. Any one out there willing to take on a hull fabricating commission? I just need the hull, I can build the rest. Or is there anyone reading this in my area that would be willing to teach me how to build this plank on frame.
Thanks everyone

I was looking at a CG Bob's Cleveland MCB Lake report thread and came across this which might work... Scale Shipyard T-ATF hull... :)
