I'm new to RES and have been getting use to a Super AVA - E. I've got 4 successful and enjoyable flights but can't say that I understand best use of the spoiler in the landing pattern. Problem is that I have a flap mentality from a Pulsar 2008 2M. Anybody have some advice/technique for using the spoiler in the landing pattern? What can you get away with? What can you not?
Thanks.

I use the SA spoiler as a method of glide path control by managing its use - i.e., not full up or down, but whatever it takes. I also have the elevator mix set so that I can "fly" it in with spoiler and elevator. Full spoiler will pitch the nose down but elevator input can bring it back above horizontal, if that makes any sense. That's how *I* use it - just another control to accomplish whatever is needed at the time.

The spoiler opening doesn't have to be much -- set it for, say, 30 degrees at max deflection. Then fool with the elevator compensation, which is non-linear. As soon as the spoiler starts to open, you need quite a bit of additional up; then it goes more or less linearly from there.

Once you get it so that the plane doesn't nose down dramatically as you add spoiler, you can experiment with glide path control. It's not as good as flaps, but with practice you can make it work.

One thing to add here.
Start with the plane on final at a height and distance so that without the spoiler you'd shoot right past the landing spot. Then moderate the spoiler and elevator so you hit the spot. You'll never land short this way. Watch the last 30 seconds of this video. You'll see me start high and you can see the plane drop a couple times as I played the spoilers. At the height that I turned on final, I would have shot right past the LZ without the spoilers.
