View Full Version : Discussion Ganging Two Motors Together

I am contemplating a plane that will require about 6500 watts. The large motor options such as the Hacker A100 with a Spin 200 ESC are good choices but expensive. AXI has a double 5330 which would allow me to run two much less expensive ESCs but the double 5330 is $800.00

Has anyone out there successfully ganged up any other motors? I was thinking about 2 Hyperion Z5025-22Bs or similar size.

I've use the "Inner Demon" gear box with two MaxCims which were capable of about 3000W, but perhaps with a pair of Neu Motors you'd get to the 6500 and very efficiently. The Inner Demon is a really nice piece of kit and very robust and easy to use. Tex.

Thanks for the information. it does not look like the Inner Demon is designed for that kind of power but I emailed them to see what they recommend.

Check with Matt Kirsch mkirsch1@rochester.rr.com http://www.drchristine.com/rccr/about/
He did a double AXI 4120 three years or so ago.

the inner demon would probable work.

I have not heard anything yet from the Inner Demon people.

Are there going to be any timing issues with two speed controllers trying to start two motors connected together?

I used MaxCims and they ran beautifully. Don't know about non-sensored systems, though. Tex.

When the ganged Axi setups were being done, I remember one of the guys telling how he set the motors to be timed together but don't recall the exact procedure. There's always going to be a little mismatch unless the Kv of the two motors are perfectly identical, something that's hard to guarantee with anything mass produced.

In this day of ultra cheap motors/ESCs, it seems like you could find a single motor/ESC solution that would be as inexpensive and probably less troublesome than a double something or other.

ETA, it wasn't AXIs, but Cyclons.

What about HiMaxx's counter rotating setup?

The large one ran with 2 85HV ESC's and a 10s setup

Thanks Karl. I was was aware of this line of motors. I wonder if the CR6320 is 3200 total input watts or for each motor?

There are certainly many large motors that will work nicely with the Jeti Spin 200 controller but these options are at least $1200.00 As far as I can find Jeti is the only ESC around that could handle 7000 watts and 12S.

I have seen several people using the Turnigy 100Amp ESCs without issues and they are only $95.00. Currently Allerc.com has the Hyperion Z5025-22 motor on sale for $115.00. I am a big fan of Hyperion motors.

Geoff,

Let me know how this works out. I'm currently running an E-Flite power 160, CC 85HV on 10s, about 70 amps and 2650 watts. I'm thinking of buying another motor and esc and linking them in tandem for a 33% Yak 54. I know this motor probably doesn't have enough power for you but I'm very happy with it.

Regards, Mark

The plane that I am contemplated is the Hangar 9 33% Sukhoi. In another thread it was e-converted using the Hacker A100 on 12S. He measured around 6000 input watts and said that the performance was good. The Hacker A100 is rather heavy (4 lbs) altthough I don't doubt that it is a great motor.

I am currrently running the Hyperion Z5045-18 motor on my Hyperion YAK using 12S. It draws about 4000 watts. Two of those motors would weigh 3.5 pounds. This motor x2 would probably be overkill. The motor one size down is the Z5035 which would probably be enough if I use 12S. Two of those motors weigh 3 lbs. Now I need to find someone who has successfully tied two of these motors together.

A very thorough review by greg Covey of an e-converion of the Hangar-9 33% Edge using the AXI Double 5330.

Regarding the "Ultra Cheap Motor/ESC" possibility, it may be worth it to look into one of these motors: http://www.bphobbies.com/view.asp?id=V450327&pid=B3675243. It's not Axi or Hacker quality, but I've had good luck with smaller (.40 equivalent) motors from this brand.

Thanks. I like the warning that they have:

"WARNING: This motor is only for the most advanced electric modelers. This motor is BIG, BAD, and very DANGEROUS!"

With the investment in airframe, esc, servos, packs etc. that you will have in the air is an experiment with cheap motors; especially run in tandem run at 6000 watts a good idea?

I see that someone commented that they tested the HXT 80-100-B 130Kv motor and got the following results:

lipo 12S 4100 HX - prop APC 27X15 - 97 Amp - 4.300 W - PULL 13,5 KG (29 lbs).

That seems reasonable.

I may be now leaning towards a single motor configuration given that I have not found anyone who is successfully running two motors together in the size that I need.

I spoke with Steve Neu (Neu Motors) and he suggested that I use the Neu 1527 1.5Y / 6.7 HDF. That is a geared setup. This weighs less that 30 oz and the suggested retail is about $350.00

I have also been looking at batteries and noticed that some of the cheaper lipos are a lot heavier than the name brand ones. For example:

Hobby City
Zippy R 6S-4150 21C 658g x 4 = 2632g (93 oz) $117.00 each

MaxAmps
MaxAmps 6S-4000 20C 545g x 4 = 2180g (77 oz) $230.00 each

Have you purchased from xcitebattery.com? Did the batteries perform OK?
