Hello I am new to the boat hobby. I would like to learn about all of the parts that can be upgraded and what all the small parts of the motor etc. are made up of. Does anyone know a video or any other source on the internet that explains what all the small parts do in the motor. I guess im looking for basic information that teaches how to upgrade and how the motors and steering mechanisms operate. Mostly talking about electric boats. Thanks for the help! :)

Hi Boatmasterfab,

A lot of information can be obtained by using the search function on this (and other) forum.

What you're asking isn't very specific as in what kind of motor(parts) you're interested.

Electric powered boats are roughly devided in two sections, the fast electrics and the rest (scale boats like tugs, yachts, merchand vessels, etc).

The go-fast boats have an average runtime of 8-10 minutes, depending on size and motorization, the scale boats can have runtimes of hours, or days, if the battery carrying capacity is big enough.

As far as motors go there are the closed can types, once the brushes have worn out, the motor needs replacement, this can vary from a few runs (soft brushes, high currents, fast boats) to years (slower vessels).

There are motors that are completely rebuildable, ranging from car motors to the big fan and startermotors that power models of ocean liners, large tugs, warships, etc.

New kid on the block are the brushless motors, as the name states, no more brush wear, generally higher performance than the same size brushed motors.
Downside is the (still) rather expensive controller for these motors.

Let us know if you need more specific info.
