Did anybody else enjoy Ed's article in this months issue MA?
It is a great article with some very good ideas that will be seen by newbies that may just wonder out to somebodies field for a look see.
One idea I have had and will put to use next time I visit my local hobby shop (20 miles away) will be to ask if I can post the location of my soaring site with contact info. Maybe just maybe somebody will want a look see.
THANK YOU Ed!!!

I've only had time to glance at this months issue. 12 hours shifts don't leave much time for reading. :( I'll make a point of giving it a read this weekend Joe.

Thanks for the kind words.
The basic premise of the article is this, new pilots are like a clean piece of paper begging for someone to draw upon it. They want to learn and they are open to learning in the style of their instructor.
If a guy shows up at a glider field with a parkflyer, he is a new pilot, eager to learn and to lean in the style of his instructor. If we turn them away, then they will likely never learn the glider style of flying and will never experience the joy of thermal soaring, slope soaring, DLGs, aerotow and all that goes with it.
If I had been turned away from the club I joined, I would be flying glow planes today and would have never become a glider pilot. I am sure I would be having a wonderful time boring holes in the sky. But, I would likely have never seen a glider flying or known about the wonders of unpowerd flight.
Who are we, as glider pilots to refuse to introduce new pilots to the wonders of soaring just because their first plane has a quiet electric motor?
I hope that was the message that came through. ;)
I hope other people will post ideas here on the best ways to integrate the new parkflyer pilots as members of our soaring clubs.

If you mean the one of the little girl with her glider, I couldn't be more in agreement with you. I even showed that one to my wife. I've been an amateur photog. many, many years and I wish I could say I took that one. So full of life and childish fun!
I would also like to give aeajr my congratualtions for a job well done! Showed that to the wife too and told her that the guy (aeajr) in the picture was one of the guys on the forum who helped me sort out some of my issues. Good job, aeajr!

Here's a cool pic on a similar theme.
Good job, Ed. Many good suggestions there for those who have to fly in public parks or in other situations where the field is shared with electrics.

I love pictures of little girls with gliders. It makes me feel sad that mine are all grown up. There was a time when they thought I was the biggest, strongest, bravest guy in the world. But that was long ago and far away.
But for a little while, I was superman and even Kryptonite could not hurt me. ;)
Of course that was as long as Mom wasn't mad at me.
Now I soar with the birds and, for a little while, I am free as a bird, till Mother Nature wants to put me in my place.
I have this problem with Moms, it seems. :p

Hi all,
After following the sail plane boards lately I have to say I was pleased but not very suprised to see Ed's great article. We have frequently enjoyed his writing skills, it was nice that others got the chance.
If he flys as well as he writes he will be dangerous at the contests ;) :D

Yes, if only Ed could fly as well as he writes. Well, considering the tpyos and puncuation; errors that sometimes creap into my writing, maybe I do fly as well as I write. ;)
Of course I get to go back and edit on the keyboard. When I am flying, I get to pick up the pieces and apply glue. I guess that is sort of like editing .... right? :o

Ed, I haven't read your article yet but I know I will enjoy it, I got involved in a whirl wind drive from Colorado Springs to Jensen Beach Fla, and back almost 5,000 mmiles, anyway here's something you might try with new people, I get model mag's that are out of date and have had the cover's ripped out by the retailer's and I attach the LHS business card to so a prospective glider guider will know he has a place to go to maybe see a glider for sale or to order one, I usually get QEFI or R/C Sport Flyer as their more likely to have a glider article in them.
BTW did you ever try to slope that site I told you about in Huntington. Dave.

What site was that Dave? I am not flying any sites in Huntington, so I must have forgotten it. Give it to me again.

Thermaler, you should add you guys' field to this list (http://groups.msn.com/PuttsRCHomePage/rcfieldsites.msnw) . I added mine as a non-AMA site but I don't think it's on there yet. It's a good way for people to find you.
I also like to leave old magazines at the doctors, dentists, banks or hospitols. I never thought about putting a card for the LHS on it though.

Ed, it was on the slope thread, you can see Target rock from there, it's some kind of state park, you were supposed to check it out. Dave.
