I am in Portland, Oregon and just may have a few hours of freedom. Can anyone suggest a hobby shop in the area that I could stop in?

Thank goodness for LHSs, for where else would I get my CA and balsa? But rarely have I found anything of interest at LHSs in my travels that I couldn't find elsewhere.

Better choice- go down to the river and visit the science/industry museum and their submarine, or look up the PT boat guys (don't know if they have weekday visiting?).

Pat,

Thanks for the leads. I crossed the river(s) about ten times today and tried to drive along the roads closest to the river to spot out some ships. Saw a few, but forgot my camera in the charging saddle at home. I wish i could have made a plan to visit some of the maritine areas and sights. I just didn't know I was going to have this free time until it was sprung on me.

I did GPS myself to a few shops though. Made it to Vic's, Bridgetown, Ted's Hobbies Unlimited, and tried to find Island Hobbies but it wasn;t where the GPS dictated it would be.

None were strong in boats which did not surprise or disparage me. (We shipbuilders have to be scroungers and I like scrounging) :)

Did manage to spend a little on some building materials and some 1:48 figures. Still looking for my 20mm guns though. But I did find a couple of rigging containers in 1:48. Would make a nice addition to a work barge.

Did I say "work Barge?" LOL...On the way to the Baltimore airport on Sunday I stopped off and bought some wood for my spud barge. Not that I need another "Diversion."

The Toesup Boat Werks is taking careful note of all these Portland, OR model shops.... as in a few weeks, the TBW will be re-locating to the area... :o;):D

How long are you in Portland?

The local club will be out at Westmoreland Casting Pond Sunday the 25th.
Tachikaze and I may head out to their meet.

You need to head West for the better Hobby shop.
Drive out Highway 26 toward the Ocean/Beaches.
After you go through the tunnel and top the hill, you will
come down on Highway 217 south. Take the exit, and head south.
Get to the left lane and take the second Exit to Canyon Road
Turn right at the bottom of the exit, and take a left at the second light
It should loop you past the Shell station, Burgerville, and then
TAMMIES HOBBIES (503-644-4535) should be there on your right.

If you miss the turn, and Burgerville on your Left, the hobby shop and Video Only
will be on your left also. If you get to the FORD dealership, turn around...

12024 SW Canyon Rd
Beaverton, OR 97005

If you need to go sailing during the week, my springer is running.. :p

Toesup, Take Umi's advice on the LHS.

Of the three I visited, Vic's had the best supply of building materials. It has been a long time since I've seen a Midwest display of styrene structural and wood shapes. They also had some of the lesser seen Plaststruct items, albeit they were pretty picked over.

Bridgetown had little for the scale R/C'r. They did have a lot of plastic models and really seem to cater well to the tank and individual small diorama scene.

Ted's Hobbies Unlimited had a few Dumas parts as well as some Octura, and
a couple of items from Proboat.

Umi,

Unfortunately, I will be leaving Friday morning back to PA. I would have liked to have seen your group, their ships, and your site.

I may have one more chance at a hobby shop run. If I do, I will seek out Tammies. Thank you for the tip.

The only other place would be Hobbytown USA out on SE 82nd and Johnson Creek Blvd. 9353 SE 82nd Ave Some of the Fast boat guys work out of that shop.

Oh, and Hometown hobbies just South of Westmoreland pond.
Hometown is primarily cars, but since they moved to Westmoreland, they may be stocking more model boat products.

:)

I'm actually surprised that Island hobbies doesn't stock more model boat supplies. One of the owners is part of the Rose City Yacht club, fast hydros.

Umi and all,

I could not find Island Hobbies. At least it was not where the GPs said it was. I had others on my list so I just went on to the next one.

After our meetings today, I did make it over to Tammies. Now that was much more on target. They had a lot more to look at and I did end up with a few goodies from Protractor and Model Shipways. Nice people too. Toesup, you'll need to put his one on your list. Great source for building supplies of almost any kind.

Boat people need to be scroungers and all the car and helicopter stuff was behind the counters as most are nowadays. There is a shop in Houston that still has it all out where you can study on how to adapt this to that. I find that most satisfying. :)

This afternoon was my last shot at seeing anything. The next few days will be all work. Still, I got out way more than usual and liked it very much.

Thanks again Umi for the suggestions.

Bump

I found Island Hobbies... :D
They moved last November... and are now within walking distance of the apartment!... :D

Tammies is the next 'Port of call' to see if they have a supply that suits my needs.

Thanks guys. ;)
