Like the title says,...
Catch a video of your tug or other ultra maneuverable ship doing a sideways crab....
I have a sloppy one here, As nice as the afternoon was, there was almost no one at the pond. So I ran the two throttles, two steering sets and took the video...
:p
I posted this one under the comedy category..

The high quality option that Arrow mentioned is available on the YouTube site.

It's hard to believe that no one else is practicing these maneuvers...
Here is another try,..
Tug tied sideways to the back of the barge, and trying to move the entire
63" length sideways... :o
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4Sbgjw5Ee28
getting a slight backward movement to the whole tow...
:p

Interesting manuevers, Umi. Looks like you could just parallel park the barge along side a dock and just motor away.
And some of those other Youtube videos are unbelievable.

No video of mine--yet. Will have the Wedell at the regatta on the 7th in Bellevue. Good chance it will be demoed or compete in the navigation--just not scale as it is not finished. So if some one else wants to capture a crab walk...................

Go Umi! You're getting that dialed in!
I am going guess that without any steering input the tug wants to pivot on the barge sticking out to starboard. I'd guess that the forward thruster stays angled away from the tendancy to turn to stbd and you steer with the aft thruster? Does it take a lot of power on the forward thruster to keep the barge in position?
Once again...that looks cool!

The forward thruster is angled at about 45degrees off the starboard bow, and running
at about half speed. I could control the rotation by adjusting the speed of the stern
thruster up and down the power band...
I tried to repeat the maneuver several times AND take my hands off the controls, but
it would quickly start to rotate and make a "turn". With the tug tied to the
barge, I was also unable to get it to crab the other direction..
Part of the reason may be that my drives do not rotate a full 360 degrees, and
that the "reverse" power from the schottel drive is not as strong from the front.
The video actually makes a nice analysis of what it is I am actually doing there... :)

For Well Enhancer these kind of manouvres are a piece of cake, but she also has 2 asipods and a bowthruster.
Got 2 movies coming (uploading them on Youtube right now) where she is sailing sideways, looking from the mast of Well Enhancer.

I get the independant controlling of the props / nozzles as the diagram that Ropanach posted.. to get even power, do i assume that the throttles have to be independant too, so you can balance the power to each prop?..
This means you have a throttle on each stick and rudder on each stick?

Hi toe's:
Yes I have + reverse, left throttel forward and reverse, rotate left and right, right throttel forward and reverse, rotate left and right. right side same thing, left hand controls left side drive system, right hand controls right side drive system, it helps if your amadexterus( speeling) and your left eye can look left and you right eye can look right, you don't want to get them crossed up. :D :D
