Well, this is my first try to convert a plastic kit and I need some help now.

I choosed the S-100 because it looks cool, has a decent size and is cheap 25€, I'm trying to do it with things that I have at home, so it's going to be a very cheap model.

I have:
S-100 Revell kit
Futaba kit from an 1/10 rc car: receiver, battery and two Big servos(Esc)
An electric motor from a toy
And finally a little servo from an heli

So... here we go,

First I glued the hull. With a clip, pieces of a pen and some pieces of plastic I made a mechanism for the rudder, using the one from the kit.

After that I made the propeller shaft, with an ink tube from a pen, and a metal shaft, I know this isn't the way to do it, but it's the cheapest way, and guess what... it' works!

First bath testing(static) It can stay for hours below the "model" waterline( I added more weight than the one in the photo)

http://static.rcgroups.com/forums/attachments/3/6/4/3/1/t1872600-120-thumb-03-05-08_1353.JPG

Now it's time to attach the electronics. Mmmm Blue what? Bluetack!! Some days ago I read somwhere that motors, etc can be attached with bluetack I tested it and... Yeah it works! With the advantage you can upgrade the components at anytime.

And this is how it's now, with removable deck. The hull it's not painted yet, and a lot of things are still in the box(guns, etc..)

I have to say that this model only has one problem, on reverse, the prop pumps the water thru the shaft, and small drops appeared, nothing important, betwen I'm not going to run backwards a lot.

Note: Sorry for my english, it's not my first language. And sorry for the quality of the videos, they're from my phone

Bigger photos down ;)

Oh, and I need help now with the prop. I don't know which one to use.

The prop from the bath test is a plastic broken prop, I have the model prop, but it has too much pitch(This is bad?)

And I don't know how to make my own prop. :(

one of the UK Boating Magazines had an article on this, they used speed 280's iirc, and drove all 3 shafts. Graupner makes some small enough.

Ill see if i can find the article and scan it for you - though that might take me a week or so to do.

Oh, thanks :)

I saw on another post a guy making the props from abs plastic, what do you think about it?

The left prop is the one I used on the video, and the right prop is from the model, and it seems to run at same speed, but I can't know it because the bath is too small xd

What about the pitch? It will stall or something?

Bad accel but more speed? I prefer top speed "cruising"

I will try it as you say Mat, thanks for the advice

Give 10 people the same kit and you will get 10 different solutions! :)

This one is mine:

Tungi, there is something odd about the prop on the right in the photo, was it bent or broken. If there is a hobby store near by you try that, they usually have some nylon props to choose from, or you can certainly order one online, brass too but more expensive of course.

Of the plastic kits that I've converted I've usually used the styrene prop that came with the kit, they are more propeller shaped than anything I could make.

These are about 1" diameter which are probably too big but they can be whittled down:

Build looks great so far. Cap

Hi there, I was just reading this thread and thought I'd throw my two cents in:
I've got the same model sitting on the shelf waiting for it's turn.
For the moters I planned on disassembling two or three servos and running the boat on them.
I've got a tug model about the same size and shape and I run that with two servos.
I've found that they had plenty of power to run it.
I actually run two moters off the guts of one servo.
I found a Dumas that makes a small two bladed prop that would probably work, otherwise I'll have to try making my own prop.
Keep up the good work and I look forward to reading more.

Thanks for the messages.

Capricorn, I'll decided to go with the low pitch prop(white one) and try it, if not I will drop by some model store. :)

To ford_63, good luck with the project, it seems it will work right. My first idea was on running it with single motor using the esc+motor of the servo, but I saw it so small I took a motor a I had from a submarine toy on my desk. The bigger the better?

How it's now :D

Hi again tungi and Ford_63,

I considered going to three servo motors and even using the servo's own speed control too. However in the past I have found the centre point of servo's speed control is hard to locate and 'drifts' ie It's rarely in the same place twice.

The other problem is powering the three servo motors adequately + the rudder servo. I am concerned about possible 'brown outs' of power. Also how about runtimes too...

As I said in a previous post "Give 10 people the same kit and you will get 10 different solutions!"

There is no 'Wrong way!".

A friend did the 1:72 model and we used a single speed 400 motor. It has great speed and ran a long time. A regular 6 cell stick pack was used. I will try to dig up some photos.
If you need small props, try Harbor Models (http://www.harbormodels.com/site08/main_pages/propellers_propshop.htm), they have bronze props down to 1/2" in diameter. I used those on my 1:48 Revell Swift boat and they work very well.
