I tested the machine in my back yard yesterday morning, it runs pretty good.
however, after the test, I was surprised by how much dirt & grass it picked up
in the chassis.

at one point during thest, the model got stuck in a small ditch, and tried to
back out, but there wasn't enough power to get it unstuck in reverse. I
switched my transmitter settings to another default model setting (100% on both
forward & reverse). it had enough power to back out.

anyone know whats the reason for the 70% forward, 30% reverse thrust that seems
to be recommended by some ESC manufacturers?

It gives you more control over throttle, wich optimimally is used much more
than brakes. Most ESC manufacturers assume you want a racing, not a bashing
configuration and don't take reverse into account. Also, if you got more
power by changing your forward/reverse ratio, then your ESC probably lost
its programming. Set your transmitter to the way you like, 70/30 or 50/50,
and reprogram the ESC for maximum power in both directions.
