I have had the above subject ARF for something like 9 years now. I had a new YS 1.20 I was gonna put on it, but I would kinda like to explore the opportunity of converting this plane to electric.

Now I am not new to electric flying, by any means, but I have never had an electric this big. My experience with electric has always been the little stuff.

For those of you that may not remember this plane, it's ballpark weight is about 11.5 lbs and the typical powerplant is 1.20 to 1.50 4 stroke. Wingspan is 73 inches.

I am looking for a somewhat "economical" solution for the motor/esc/battery combo and would consider HobbyCity as a source for the goods if anyone here has a good suggestion of a combo. Also, I already have 10 a123 2300 cells and have already started looking at potential 10s1P and 5s2P motor options. I could possibly even consider more cells for more flight time.

Does anyone here have a suggested combo for this project?

Thanks in advance for your advice!

This is the motor I have been pondering....

what type of flying are you planing on doing? that motor looks a little heavy for your project, you will need to buy 10 more A123 cells for a 10s2p setup 10s1p will not be suitable for runtime, if you want to fly for 3-6 minute yes but you will probable want to fly longer then that, do you have motocalc? if not you should get it, it will help you allot, you can get it free for 30 days at motocalc.com
this is the motor i would say would be more suitable for your plane,

That does look like a pretty good choice. Thanks for the link.

I am not much of a 3D pilot; I'm more of a sport flyer. I want the lightest choice possible as lighter almost always flies better, however, I want to avoid anemic performance. I kinda figured I would end up having to use 2 packs wired parallel to get some decent flight time. Still, if the weight of the two packs isn't too much for this airframe, it's still better in the long-run price-wise! ;)

I decided that the electric conversion on this plane would just cost me too much. I have a 1.4 ci gas motor (one of the first engines that Keith Baker of BME fame made - he's a friend) and decided that this would be my best solution for this plane.

Thanks for the input, though.

I am thinking now that I am gonna search out a nice and light .25 - .40 sized fun fly type plane so that I can run a 10s high voltage set up using the cells that I have.

Motocalc sure has made some improvements since the last time I tried it out. I can see now that I am gonna just have to buy it!
