i am new to this. i just got a house on the water and looking to buy a rc boat i narrowed it down to either the Blackjack 26 Catamaran which has a .15 motor and is 26 inches long. Or the nitro AquaCraft SuperVee 27 which has a .18 motor and is 27 inches long

So this is what Ive noticed
1. the blackjack is wider so more stable right? But it has a smaller motor so I’m guessing its slower.

2. The drive systems are different the Nitro has a rudder where the blackjack the whole drive system moves which one is better

they are both around the same price so just trying to get some advice

Thanks

Of those two choices I'd have to go with the Super-Vee 27.
Neither boat is perfect but the SV 27 has less issues. The biggest problem with the Blackjack is the steerable outdrive. The U-joints are breaking on them and steerable outdrives can make the handling "interesting" at times. Note in Pro Boat's video that they have to really slow the boat down when turning.
The SV-27 has some minor problems itself. They seemed to have overtightened a lot of bolts on it, the prop nut and the bolts holding the radio box in place are two spots.

Hmmmmmmmmm I have both and love both of them, While I have never had any trouble out of my blackjack stearable drive, I have heard of others who have, it is not as fast as my Sv but very stable, eather way your are going to love it Ax

Hello Everybody,
I am now the proud owner of a super vee nitro and i LOVE IT
it is an awesome fiberglass boat(VERY THICK HULL!!) started right up wen i got it
and only took a few tanks to get leaned out
first flip wasnt too bad and it didnt even try to sink
I was so surprised and relieved as i poured out the water and it fired right back up
ANYBODY LOOKING TO GET INTO THIS HOBBY THIS IS THE BOAT FOR YOU!! dont hesitate you wont be disapointed and it is a great value on tower hobbies
Radio has excellent range engine is powerful ,reliable, and sounds very tuned with the included pipe.
I HAVE A FEW POINTERS FOR EVERYONE ON THIS FORUM
1. 30% nitro runs great and make sure it has at least 16% oil content
2. Dont overtighten fuel cap
3. Keep inside of hull as clean from fuel as you can as the struts appear to be glued
4. I had read some posts about the motor struts getting loose. I SUGGEST using somne type of silicone and runnign a bead along each side of the struts on both sides, and silicone the nuts on the struts for the motor mounts.
5. Make sure you grease your driveshaft with grimracer grease, or i SUGGEST using a marine grade grease. Grease about every 5 runs to ensure proper lubrication of shaft. It is tough to get out the first time and i used a flat baldescrewdriver between drive dog and shaft support to help get the shaft out, after the collet is loose of course. Greas the shaft. When reinstalling make sure the tube that the shaft sits in is ligned up staright wit the collet and twsit in the shaft while pushing. If you twist clockwise the shaft may begin to fray so iu suggest a counterclockwise twist. Once u feel the shaft is starting to go in and is lined up place a block of wood at end of driveshaft and gently tap with hammer till shaft is in. Make sure there is a 3mm gap between drive dog and shaft suppport!! Your now ready to run!
6. FRESH BATTERIES and make sure the remote isnt blinking
7. tank of fuel lasts about 8 minutes but try and bring it in before then and refuel. Its mcuh easier to start if it didnt run out of fuel.
8. I suggest staying with plastic props because if you hit something the prop will break but the boat will be fine. I havnt tried a meatl prop but i would think if u hit soemthign it may damage the driveshaft instead of the plastic prop giving way. I feel that the stock propeller supplied with this boat works great but i havent tried any others yet.
9. Keep in deeper water and avoid going to close to the shore.
10. Trim the tabs downwards a little bit because i found with the stock setting the bow bounced around.
Those are my suggestuions for runnign your super vee nitro. Remember these are only suggestions and i am not responsible for any problems with your boat simply becase u did somethign i suggested in this posting. I dont think you should have any problems though, because this boat is built well and i suggest it to anybody looking in to RC NITRO BOATING!!
Any suggestions on good prop upgrades, or any other good mods for this boat>
Thank you

Good stuff.
Just to clarify things, those are not struts but engine rails.
Do not overtighten bolts or nuts. Some are too tight from the factory like the rpop nut and the 2 bolts holding the radio box in place. As a preventative measure I CA'ed #4 washers on the radio box tabs.
The strut isn't very adjustable from the factory. That's an easy fix. Remove the strut then cut off the tubing exiting the transom then insert that piece back into the strut.
The trim tabs are hard to bend. www.offshoreelectrics.com makes some very nice replacements.
The engine will take a lot of prop but when you go too far it really affects handling. If it becomes a handful add 8 oz. of lead under the radio box.

Thank you Ron for helping clear things up with my terms. I dont feel as thoguh iw ll need to adjust my trim tabs often enough to require the offshore elcetrics tabs but thanks for the infromation. I thnk im going to stick with the stock propellers for now because i dotn want to compromise any handling and i liek the way it is running now. My one main question is do these boats last? Is the boat as tough as it seems and how much maintanece is really needed over time besides greasing the drive shaft. Considering i carefully run the boat in deep enoguh water and am cautious, will this boat proved me with solid, and dependable rc ntiro boat? Is there any particular parts that you find yourself replacing? Any thing else i shoudl know about this boat.
Thanks Ron for taking the time to respond to my questions.

The only real part that I've swapped out so far is the flex cable. I couldn't get the drive dog off or tighten it down do I replaced the whole thing with a Hughey cable and Octura drive dog. The engines will last a long time with proper care. A shot of after-run oil after a day's runnig will help to keep things from corroding. Some spend the big bucks for the commercial stuff but all it really is is automatic transmission fluid repackaged.
I tried at least 4 different props on mine and really didn't see a lot of difference in speed between them or a change in the engine sound. Where I saw the biggest change though was in how the boat handled. If you're happy with the stock prop or one close to it, fine, you actually may be better off and happier with that one.

thanks ron for the response, i ahve been doing a tiny shot of wd40 is that a good corrosion prevenatative or is the atf more efective? thanks

WD-40 is only good if you're only going to store the engine for a short time. WD-40 has a problem with evaporating after a while and leaves a shellac-type of residue behind, that's why if you use the stuff on hinges or other items that get a lot of use, you have to keep hitting them with more of it.
For longer term storage you're better off using a fogging oil or some other lightweight oil. Those with the high-dollar racing engines will completely remove the engines, soak them in oil then put them in a sealable (Zip-lock) bag.

the outdrive on mine broke after 2 runs. If you really want the BJ26 just do a little searching and you can find some good reliable hardware for it. Then its a good boat. I love mine

Check with www.offshoreelectrics.com as Steve has some aftermarket parts for your boat. I got my Hughey flex cable, drive dog, and adjustable trim tabs from him. He also sells props and other things that you might want. Great company, I've never seen anyone say a bad word about him.

If it helps to make up your mind.....Here is my Blackjack:
Dynamite .18 with upgraded header and Macs pipe
New upgraded hardware and prop
and a few subtle appearance changes......Its a good dependable boat now.

Just curious, what is the benefit of the off set rudder that areromarine sells?

For one thing, it makes it a lot easier to pull out the flex cable to lube it. It is also working in cleaner water for better control.

Is the nitro super v faster than the electric brushless super v ?
Also how much tweaking or adjustments on the motor are considered regular on these nitro boats. I know I do a lot of tweaking on my nitro car to get it to run right from day to day.

Out of the box, the speeds are almost identical to the MPH. The brushless version just gets there faster.
The needle settings across the country are close also, something that I was surprised at. Most of us have the high-speed needle set at 2-1/2 turns out or very close to that.

I have a Nitro motor version...I am probably going to start using this boat in a salt water bay because i have no fresh water lakes near me(IM on LI...on the South Shore) I flush it out after by sucking fresh water into a drinking straw, than putting it on the intake, and blowing hte water through..i do about a whole Glass full(idk like 500mL) IS that okay...and also the prop got chipped up on me so there are three nicks in the edges of the propeller think it will still run like this? Its not even broken in yet i just havent found a sufficiant area to run it in. I choose the bay because i can go off my boat(if it dies I go and get it) Would it be a smart choice to get a failsafe on the the throttle? Thanks for answering any/all my questions.

A better idea is to silicone a piece of fuel tubing to the bottom of a bottle like for pop or milk then hook it up to flush the cooling system. A good shot of WD-40 through there will help also. While you're at it you can spray the engine down also with the WD and any other metal parts that may corrode.
