I'd check the yellow pages under antique dealers. That is where you can usually get good leads to contact an arts and antiquities appraiser.

Be forewarned, the figure they give you is mostly useless, since the value is only what someone will pay for it, not the insurance value-which is a highly inflated number. The sales price may be 1/2 to 1/3 the "appraised price". The biggest benefit is that they can give you a ballpark idea and tell you if something is trash or worth keeping.

Do you know anything about the painting that would make you think it's valuable or are you just hoping it may be worth something? A true appraisal can cost hundreds of dollars or more, depending on the piece and amount of research needed.

I repair 200 year old furniture and deal with appraisers and antique dealers somewhat regularly. In general they are reputable, but there are those that would take advantage of you as well.

Much better off contacting a local museum and asking for advice on where to find an appraiser. If you don't have anything local I would contact one of the large auction houses like sotheby's. They can give a rough appraisal with e-mail pics.

Curiousity is killing me, who is it by....can you post a pic?
