What is good (and available) in a 2m sailplane these days? I like the looks of the Ruby that Soaring USA sells. Does anyone know what the actual flying weight is for this ship? Any other suggestions? I want a ship that can take a hard launch and has provisions for ballast for those windy days. Oh yes, I really prefer a cross-tail configuration.

There's several threads on this topic. Most of them point to the Organic. I have a Laser and really love it. It was designed for competition by Darryl Perkins, the wing was made by Phil Barnes. It easily signals lift, and stays in it, and it will zoom like crazy! I don't think there is any 2M that's better! BUT the Laser is out of production for a while, so if you want one now, you'd have to find one that's used. The Rouge is a well-behaved nice flying ship, but it flies much slower than the Laser, and I don't think it will take a really hard launch. You can also do a search on the Gabby, and Art Hobby has several 2Ms to choose from depending on your like and dislikes. Just my 2cents, search the other threads on this.

Actually, the Rogue will take a really hard launch. The only other 2 meter plane I ever flew that launches that hard, fast, and high is a Duck. It's a great RES 2 meter. Ed Whyte builds them.

I stand corrected, thanks for the clarification Rob. I know you had your foot on the pedal when Tim's blue Rogue went in the air a month or so back. I just wasn't sure how hard you were taping it.

Gerald Baxter won 2-meter at the Tangerine last year with a Rogue. I can assure you that, if Geralds plane was any indiction, you cannot break a Rogue off a winch. Gerald launched that thing to the moon literally rocketing off the top and jerking the stick back. I've been accused of launching kinda hard but I couldn't get close to Gerald's launch. I launched right behind him a couple of times and tried without success.

Ok, we get it now. The Rouge can take a hard launch.
I'd still rather fly a 2M Laser.

Trouble is that a new 2 meter Laser is pretty hard to find...and after having flown the Rogue a bit I'm not so sure that a lightly loaded and strong RES plane isn't a good choice for 2 meter competition.
Your mileage will probably vary, and that's a good thing.

One of the guys in my club has a Rogue.... it's one of those planes that "just looks right" and it seems to be a superb flyer. It's shown on Don Richmond's website, www.hilaunch.com, but I just spoke to Don and he says they are no longer available. However, Don also mentioned that Mark Miller now has the rights to it, so maybe you can inquire of him if he plans to sell it in the near future.

Mark has one and has flown it successfully in some of our club contests. I'm sure he'll chime in here, but in any even I think he has plans to bring it to market in some form.
