Didn't Stanley Hiller fly one of his full size helis under full remote control
in the late 40's/early50's?

I'm sure I've seen a picture of it somewhere.......!

Not sure about Stanley doing it Pete, but it has been done.

Me too, but I think it was the American military who fitted radio controls
to 3 full sized heli's. (Enstroms or Brantly 2B's, the memory's not what it
were). They all crashed at the hands of the experienced pilots though, so no
changes there :-))

The pics were in one of the early editions of RC Helicopter or MHW. I think
it was after CCT went tits up anyway, so they weren't in his mag.

For only a bit more (US$4000) you could pick up the Bergen
Industrial Twin with a 10 kg payload:

http://bergenrc.com/IndustrialTwin.asp

It is a little out of your price range, but for US$80,000 you could
buy a Yamaha R-MAX with a 3.1 m rotor:

Hi Phil... I was describing the real machine...

The RC model would be piston driven o'course.

The picture I'm thinking of was an air-to-air shot taken at altitude (well
circuit height, at least). I'm certain it was Hiller UH12 (The bubble canopy
job, vaguely reminiscent of a Bell 47) and there was no-one in the cockpit!
From what I recall, it was done to demonstrate that the Hiller was so
inherently stable that it could be flown remotely, even with the crude remote
controls available in those days......

Oh that's what he meant! When he said twin turbo I started having fantasys
of Toyota Supras again.
Yet another obsession that fucks up my sleep pattern/life!

Yep! That sounds like a pure Hiller system......!

And a Hiller has one of those:-) The flybar is also right on the leading
edge of the paddles and the paddles are set at around 10 degrees pitch
(minimum). Lot of drag I always thought.

The positive pitch on the paddles is to stop the runaway nose down dive in fast
forward flight. It also works on models, but only if you never fly
inverted......!

Aren't there very large RC helis being used for agricultural use?

Yep, it's the Yamaha system even though one of the guys is called Honda. Can
get a bit confusing stuff like that:-))
